when car and driver compared s4 to 335i, they said X-drive will only hurt the times due to extra weight and none-sport suspension.

Yup! Had some snowy slush here last night and i put it to the test. Flooring it and taking turns was very impressive to say the least. Coming from a RWD E46 which was a nightmare in bad weather, the XI is an awesome machine.

As for m3 control arms and other suspension linkage parts, we do kind of lose out on compatibility of those.

People who have never driven awd don't get how good it is in the snow.

Most people love the way muscle cars sound. I know I would rather listen to a v8 than an I6 any day. |

they loved it for the most part, because they are not use to seeing a BMW at these events lol. Usually its the same ol boring mustangs, vets and old muscle cars that break down every so often... It was priceless to see their jaws drop as i pull around for another run lol.

I could care less about how they thought. In the end I drive the better car, in my opinion. They would be deluded to think otherwise.

I have an XI in LA California where there is absolutely no snow fall and rarely rain (the car came from New Jersey). Never owned a RWD car but isn't a problem to me, it can take corners like a boss with little loss of traction lol just need KWs to keep it stable and get rid of the ugly XI height. And when I get bored I take out a fuse to make it RWD but then I lose all Traction, ABS, of course 4x4 so all the lights on the instrument panel light up lol. along with seat belt light, brake light, flickers don't turn off after turning, windshield wipers turn on sometimes, speedo doesn't work, Mpg doesn't work, and the steering wheel buttons don't work. But once the fuse is back in it all works again!!!! lol fun times without that fuse though. It's fuse #20 for me not sure for the 328xi

Lol! make sure you wet your tires or something, mine wouldn't peel out because either tires are too fat (255..they aren't that fat ), they're still new (had them for about 2 months barely drive the car), or it was on asfalt. Not sure lol but donuts are insane. My friend could do it on his bone stock 330i no problem I'm guessing because his tires are old, almost same cars except mine is 330xi.

The xDrive does not feel like an FWD. I'd say the regular Quattro and SH-AWD cars feel like FWD cars. It has 40/60 split, but since it has a electronically controlled clutch actuated center diff, it can send up to 100% of the power to either axle and can do so in milli seconds! The Quattro cannot do this! (I believe it's 75% max for quattro) So in terms of sports car feel and RWD biased-ness, the xDrive is superior hands down! Lets not even consider the nose heavy nature of the Audi's in general. In terms of snow performance, I can't comment on the Quattro since I haven't driven one in the snow. But I can stay that I have never had any trouble with my 335xi in the past 4 winters, even when purposely trying to drive and drift over deeper snow in a plaza to see if it gets stuck! My problem with having a RWD car in areas that have defined seasons or mild winters is the "in between" time. When it's consistently cold and snowy, my rwd e90 with snow tires as good or better than either of our other two cars with all seasons. One is a FWD honda and the other an AWD Lexus RX350. But when it's 30-40 degrees and dry on the roads like in spring or fall or when the temp swings from 30-60 every other day, driving my car with either snows or summer performance tires sucks. The summers don't grip well at those low temps and can be stiff and noisy. Those temps are also really too high for winters and they are squishy and noisy as a result. But yeah it's brilliant in hot summer and dead of winter. I suspect an xdrive with all seasons would handle spring/fall better.
As far as "feel" goes, I can tell the difference in steering feel and body roll between the xi and the RWD models. My rwd car has the sports suspension. |

I got my ass handed to my by a low 12 sec nitrous run dodge charger and a mustang cobra by .2 sec or so. Otherwise I just took the black car as you can see I reeled in at the end in that in-car vid... It wasn't the best day to run and I did back to back runs ... It was 100F at 7pm and humid! |

My XI is the first AWD car Ive owned and I must say, I miss RWD. I live in a Alaska where we get piles of snow but with the proper tires and not driving like an idiot go a long way. Will an XI be better in the winter? No doubt about it, but RWD works just fine too, plus it can be alot of fun in the winter and you dont have to carry the extra weight around in the dry months.
If I would do it again, I may have looked at a 135i or 335i more closely. With cars there always this struggle in my head about form vs function, form has won out alot of times in my life but I dont regret getting an XI. |
