improving diesel engine starting hot / cold

hi all

to cut a long story short

i've had a few dates lately with a very nice man who works as an engineer involved with JCB.

so we are out in my car (325d 08) and talking about how nice it is, smooth yeah, pulls like train yeah, quiet yeah, comfy yeah BUT he says it isn't running right, i say what do you mean its perfect ?

what he noticed is when it starts hot or cold it goes rr,rr,rr-start, (just like my old 320d did too), he says it should go rr-start if set up right, less cranking.

(are you all still with me !!)

he talked me into letting him have the car yesterday to do his thing.

low and behold it now starts like rr-start, bursts into life after barely a turn of the crank, i'd even say it feels a bit more lively / urgent on the road too

he will not tell what he's done to it, says i have to find out for my self, so far i know its not had new glow plugs/ air filter/ fuel filter / battery/ injectors

please help me, whats he done to it? its driving me nuts not knowing

thinking it must be injectors or pump timing ??????

yours , katie

Has he put a Citroen engine in it?

Mine starts like yours use to, always wondered why such the long crank but not long enough to worry about (HPFP failure etc). So curious for the responses.

Lol, how do you just 'reprogram the ignition timing'?!

Frob,
I have no clue but knows that it involves hexa coding/ programming. Those people who tune the cars should be able to write it.

ok

we are getting closer to an answer, its either

reprogrammed

or

fine tuned the injection pump timing

which seems the most likely?, i'm going for the injection pump timing on the basis that i can see finger marks around the engine where bits have been removed / worked on -i lifted the plastic cover off the top of the engine and there are finger marks on the rocker cover /inlet manifold etc- rather than an untouched engine bay thats just had a laptop plugged in.

kathy.

Whatever he's done you'd better tell BMW, as they employed the wrong man.

You can't adjust the injection timing or anything from under the bonnet it's all controlled by the ECM so would have to be reprogrammed if this is what he's done!

The simplest way of getting a first time start on my 320d is to put a trickle charger on overnight. Works every time.

Kathy
I think that he has mapped your car with reprogrammed ignition timing.
And that is why you feel that it lively / urgent on the road.
