can low millage effect 1'er ?

so,
currently I do 80km day (both ways) to work,
(this may be changing) to some place closer,
That's only 4km a day both ways (so 2km drive - 5mins)

apart from lowering my annual millage from 20k to about 2k, reduced gas and no toll roads and also reduced insuarance
also being able to sleep in

Is there any issues with doing such low millage's on the 1'er, with regard to battery not being charged or engine not getting up to temp.

I also do one day a week run of 80km's

do you guys have any thoughts

cheers

Low milage

It is true that such low mileage might be a problem for an ICE in general. Its great that you may do an 80 km drive once a week to "clean out the tubes" and get everything up to operating temp.

Your new routine might be the perfect one for an i3 or i3 REX

Internal Combustion Engine, one concern is that the exhaust system in short drive cars don't get dried out and often tend to rust out, the other issue might also be that you're battery may become discharged over time.

Solutions:
1.) Turn 5 minute drive into a 15 minute drive.
2.) Buy a motorcycle
3.) Buy a pussified version of a motorcycle (scooter)
4.) Walk as an attempt to be a healthier individual
5.) Drive car

This really is an ideal use case for an electric car. Biking, powered by man or machine, probably isn't a year-round solution since you're in Canadia.

As far as potential wear to the engine, I don't think this is any more or less wear than you would put on it before. It will still experience two cold starts per day, just without the long stretch of warmed up operation in the middle. It's one thing if you were making a higher frequency of cold-start trips, but you aren't so I don't see how that would negatively effect it.

Like mentioned, maybe exhaust moisture, catalysts not getting up to temp, brake rust, and battery charge are things that could potentially be affected, but these are usually negated in short order after starting the car.

The only thing to watch out for is that since your car will nearly never be at operating temperature, you need to have more self control with "spirited driving", since your opportunities will be fewer. Scratching that itch on a cold engine will increase wear.

thankxs Rj,

it's also a shift job, so some mornings, some afternoons, and on the early shifts I will be picking up my daughter, again near my job, so in theory,

some days will be early morning start, work, after start, pup daughter home
other days, afternoon start, work, late night start home
1 day, late night start 50 km drive, early morn start 50km drive home

but good points

I'm more worried about the battery as the bm's seem very electronic heavy.

Just try your best to get the car to operating temps once or twice a week and you'll be good. Is this car parked in the garage? If so, just charge it once in a while.

I got one of these at Canadian Tire when it was on sale. Reviews suck but so far I haven't had any issues for the past year charging 6 cars and a boat. I get the cars to full charge at least once a month especially during winter months when I don't drive them. I've only driven the 1M about 3 times last year and the batteries are still in great condition.

+1
Perfect for an i3 BEV. I'm sure you can get a killer deal on one coming off lease. We have one we use for just these sort of trips. E90 M3 for the fun stuff :-)

I used to take about a 100 flights a year, so I was never home... The F10 had only 11,xxx after 3 and a half years... The e92 had similar low miles, although I had 2 motorcycles then as well, and I loved driving that car... The F80 currently has 57xx miles after roughly a year and a half of ownership, and the local gig I took is about 2 miles to the office... Haven't had any problems but I tend to drive my cars / bikes hard, even in that short distance...

Point is, it's gonna take a hell of a long time for you to develop issues - IF you even develop issues... Weeks would go buy without me touching the car(s) and never an issue...

390 miles in a month on my F80, 110 of which came from the drive home from the dealership. Will maybe do 50 miles a month. Lolz.

just get a trickle charger for the car to maintain the battery...any issues from limited use will only pop up years in the future if at all
