Shiv – need LSD for my “Track Addiction”

After my track day last week with my PROcede’d 335i, I have come to the conclusion that my open rear diff is my biggest handicap (not counting my driving skills of course). .

Reference: "The best day ever" http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=72747

While I was able to out-run a 911 4S (996) on the day, in the future I want to show the Porsche/Ferrari drivers what a 335i can really do.

Fortunately, by the time we all next meet on the track in a couple of months or so, I will no doubt have version 2 installed. Hence I think I need to also install a LSD to be able to apply this power to the track surface.

Shiv, I know you run a Quaife LSD in your car and wonder if you would recommend one for me? Someone told me the Drexler LSD was very good but it seems very pricey – in Australia at least.

I love my PROcede-powered 335i and had so much fun on the track with it. Thank you Shiv.

Cheers.

I'm not Shiv but the Quaife is my first choice. It's clutchless, quite some of us have it in their car's and are very satisfied with it.

The Drexler is a clutch-type diff and AMG uses it in their cars. AMG tested the diff 300.000 km on the Nordschleife and it works well. The 335i's in the Bathurst race used this diff.

IMO both diffs are excellent, as already mentioned I prefer the Quaife and will have it installed before wintertime.

Cheers
Eugen

Whats the production date of your 335i? Later production date 335i models had the ring gear welded to the case making it impossible to remove install a LSD unit. I haven't heard anyone coming up with a solution yet unless you buy a complete entire differential with the LSD installed which can be a lot of money.

I am aware about this welded diff and expect Quaife will find a solution soon. If not, I will probably go with the Drexler, if the price difference is worth to mention. I want the LSD primary for the wintertime. The e46 M3 with its LSD has been behaving great on snow, which is a normal condition where I live. The 335i should behave the same.

Please define the "later production" . What dates are we talking about?

LOL...and why have you bought a convertible?

I noticed also that in Northern countries there are more convertibles even than Greece ,Italy & Spain... I never understood why i.e London is full of convertibles as its raining all year long there.

The e93 is my first vert I have. The only reason I deciced this time for a convertible is that it has a steel roof and feels like a e92 when it is closed ( except of the weight, the PROcede does a good job here ). We have around 5-6 months where you can drive open ( > 20 degrees celsius ) which is good enough for me to go for the e93 and sell my motorbike. It was a good decision.

I enjoy it .

Cheers

The diff changed 03-04/2007 which causes much more efforts / parts / money to drop in a LSD. I'm sure I have a welded one, build 04/24/2007.

Definitely. I am waiting for Birds/UK to come up with a solution for the Quaife and welded diffs. Of course, I like to see how the car behaves on snow with DSC/DTC/CBC on first.

@ Panoz: How often did you launch with DTC off up to now ?

My e92 is a October 2006 build. Hopefully that is early enough to allow for an LSD.

Cheers.

Plenty...but not from complete stop. I use to drag-race form 2nd gear around 60Kmh.

It's always good when you have not spent your last penny for the car so that you can go for a LSD if you like it, even when it will cost a bit more .

I'm not saying I'm racing. I'm just stressing some "quick guys" when I get the chance

Hmmm.... so you can still swap the entire pumpkin if you wanted to like any other car, correct? I think I would just swap the entire diff anyway for ease of installation, but I wonder if quaife would offer a core exchange with their LSD. This was a pretty common thing among the s2000 community when swapping out diffs for a higher final drive ratio.

Question: Wouldn't an M3-E92 LSD would fit properly to a 335i ?
Why should we make experiments with Quaife and other aftermarket LSD's? Dont you think that the official BMW-M LSDs would have the most appropriate setting in order to cooperate with our cars by the best possible ways?

Fitment. Historically, M Diff's do not fit their non-m counterparts.

Oh...didn't know that. I hope this will change in E92's case.

What's the price of the Quaife? I probably lucked out - my build date is 01/07...

any word on WHY they changed the diff? anybody thought of the LSD out of a e46 330 or z4 with the performance package? it's my understanding they had LSD's in those. i know my Z3 has one. kind of doubt it would work from one of those though.... but if someone tells me otherwise, i'm sure there's a wrecked donor car out there somewhere
