Muffler Delete vs. Muffler Upgrade???

So I'm in a slight pickle here. I have an e90 328i and know that performance mods won't really do much for the car, so I'm just resorting to aesthetic mods like exhaust sound, lights, etc. Now the pickle I'm in is that i don't know which one to choose; get a muffler delete and new tips??? Or save up and get a new free-flow muffler system??

I'm not a fan of muffler deletes, yeah it's loud but it's not a very refined sound and it drones in the car. Save up and get a proper aftermarket exhaust, Eisenmann is my favorite for NA BMWs.

I got my car with a muffler delete already done and I really like it. I don't know if they did anything else closer to the front end but it's a straight pipe where the muffler should be. I don't think it drones at all but it certainly isn't silent. Engine braking also produces a nice burble that echos off buildings.

Yea i would prefer to go that route but surprisingly just the exhaust/tips alone of a notable brand can be pricey . Do you know how other brands like remus match up??

On a turbo car a muffler delete is a cheap way to get more horsepower and piss off prius drivers everywhere. On an N/A car I don't think the power gains offset the noise.

oh yeah, only at 1.7-1.8rpm even on a NA car. Other than that, its not too bad.

Also you might have to insulate the rear arm rest cup holder and rear seat center cubby as they will rattle.

I recently did a muffler delete on my 328i... It seems to me that everyone has different results and different opinions... Mine has no "drone" whatsoever, yes there is a very annoying low tone to the exhaust, but that is different from drone. Drive a corvette or older cobra mustang and you will know what drone is. That benign said, I have read posts and seen videos of 328i MD that definitely have bad drone. I don't know what causes such huge differences in everyone's exhaust, but the only real way to find out how yours will sound for sure is to do it... Which I highly recommend you DO NOT do... Go read my thread if you want haha.

+1

Finally someone who actually understands drone, my muffler delete does not drone at all it actually sings to me.

Take my eisenmann sr mid-pipes that are for sale, install, drive around it with no muffler then just have a shop extend the tips to where they're supposed to be.

When I got my muffler delete there was a significant increase in power that registered on the butt dyno.

I have a 325i E92 with a muffler delete. I'm not bothered about performance gains but the sounds very pleasing. It's pretty quiet on a cruise but when accelerating the sound comes to life.

Check out my YouTube vid.

Most likely the difference is where they cut the exhaust (before or after the resonator. Pre-resonator deletes have a bad habit of being too loud and droning. Post-resonator deletes don't tend to drone at cruising speeds (reason for the resonator)

Even your OE exhaust drones. It is tuned to move the resonance away from the cruising speeds and flow.
