Depends on how patient you are and what tools you use. But, like I said, if it isn't working who cares what it looks like. The only other options is paying a couple hundred bucks for a new (nice looking) fob.

It's probably a good thing to have a second key anyway.

FYI a couple years ago, I experimented. I do have comfort access, and I removed the coin cell. When I put the fob in the dash, the vehicle started.

i have comfort access with 2 keys. i can also enter when i hit the unlock button every time but the vehicle does not recognize when i touch the door or even (slightly) pull the handle every time. It's randomly not working and the dealer cannot get it to fail so they charged me $110 to diagnose nothing and $16.99 for a "BMW battery". It was my 1st visit to the dealer and i told him i was not happy with that price but if it worked, it was worth it. All tested well before I left but not anymore.. They aren't sure which battery they replaced but both are now identical batteries so note that WalMart batteries must be BMW batteries. 2nd visit was last week and they couldn't get the vehicle to not open w/comfort access.

Has anyone ordered the battery from Amazon and performed the install - this
is for the rechargeable battery ONLY?

I've got the key fob separated and can see the rechargeable battery soldered in
however, the battery in the Amazon photo shows its mounting tabs 180 degrees
offset across the center of the battery. In the key fob, the tabs are opposite
one another and not across the battery center point.

There's this one on ebay, also advertized for e90. The tabs are in differrent position than the Amazon battery. I've only found 1 diy video for rechargable batt replacement and it's for an e46. The ebay battery looks closer to the one shown on the video for the e46. Just started getting key-batt message myself, so looking at options.

I ordered an identical battery to the one that came out of key fob, replaced the old battery, and my key fob functions still do not work. I'm beginning to think my issued may lie in the receiving end (antenna/transponder) of the key fob

Hello!
My key fobs are also not working on my e91 even the manual key don't unlock/lock the car. Fortunately it starts the car. I think my central lock is ok, because when I get in and push the lock button on the dash, it locks/unlocks all the doors.
Anybody knows what could cause the problem?

Try putting the key on an electric tooth brush charger to charge the soldered on battery.

I also have a FOB that isn't working to unlock or lock doors, but works once plugged into dash. New battery, no difference. Dealer said that since I have convenient access that they would need to reprogram the FOB. They quoted approx 1 hour (@ $135/hr). Another service advisor at the dealership told me not to bother with the programming that the FOB was simply no good.

Having this issue as well. I replaced the CAR battery and within a couple days (I think or maybe less) the lock/unlock stopped working on the fob. Though I needed a new battery in the fob so replace the battery in the fob. Still doesn't work. Now I get an error light with a key and a battery icon. Any suggestions?

You can buy about 10 cr2032 battery's on ebay for 5 bucks
delivered to your door.
Mine finaly wore out Sunday I checked the new battery before
I put it in with a voltmeter . Should be around 3.3 when new.

so i ordered replacement batteries, tested them (good voltage), and had them professionally soldered into the circuit board at a computer repair shop. I've tried 2 different, brand new batteries and neither of them have fixed my key fob.

None of my buttons work on the remote, I'm only able to start the car with the key fob stuck in the dashboard. I'm starting to think the circuit board has failed in some way and I just need to give up and replace the entire thing for like $450 from the dealer :'(

any other ideas? does the key fob need to be matched with the car once the battery is changed in it? any suggestions welcome!

cheers

I'm having the same drama.

Keyfob starts the car but won't unlock/lock the doors. I check my fuse panel and all fuses seem good.

...please help?

I recently replaced my key fobs with the $10 Amazon cases. Amazing quality if not better then the original case but it stopped working. Changed both but one stopped working as I may have damaged the circuit board.

I had fixed by a guy who was recommended in this forum for $50. I was told that the rechargeable batteries in these last forever as they have very little stress throughout the years.
