Buy the six cylinder engine - just check out the various video clips on this site (Carlos' one springs to mind) of the acceleration to 60 - it doesn't happen like that in the 320d - trust me I know.

You will regret it if you buy that 320d. I did and do.

Well i have a 330d auto with ED and do a 39 miles commute each day. 50% Motorway at 75-80 and 50% A roads at 50-60. Only 3 tanks so far but I am averaging 40 MPG which is damn good in my book.

On a motorwat cruise at 80 mph it is returning 42-43MPG. A slower speed would see 45ish.

Thanks for all the info, you've all been really helpful.

Went up to the local stealer's and tried the 163hp engine and then the 177 back to back. Biggest difference between them seems to be the more sudden drop off in power at the top of the rev range especially in second and third in the 163 car.

In second on the 163 @ 4500 RPM the power just disappears, on the 177 its tops out slightly further on but the power is constant with no sudden embarrassment as your trying to pass someone.

I know much of this is just getting used to changing gears sooner, after the Celica with its 8500 rpm vvtil engine its going to take a while to convert back to diesel mode.

Does anyone know if a remap on the 163 will reduce the drop off upper rev ranges?

a remap pn a 163 is mind blowing same as all the engines really 325 335 it takes out all the turbo lag and makes more grunt you will know if its been remapped easy 1st 2nd 3rd are quick even on motorway 70 in 6th still pulls to 90 easy and quick

I have a 335d, my friend has a 320d. They look the same, mine has twice the power. I get 500 miles to a tank, he gets 600.

BUT I get out of mine with a huge grin every day!!

I got an ex demo for £26.5k, he bought his new for £29k

I think on balance If I was doing 26000 miles a year then it would have to be the ED 320d.

The six cylinders are excellent, but with something like a £500 difference in the annual fuel bill, let alone maintenance, insurance and everything that goes with it would be enough to sway me. Even more so the difference between a newer and older car if you plan to rack up the miles.

I'm glad I do less than half that mileage.

Depreciation is the major issue with that sort of milage. Mine is generally 25-35k per year depending on where I am working.

Depreciation on a high value car is pretty scary anyway, but at higher mileage it's painful.

There is another way to look at this

Lets say you buy a 335d/330d with 10k on the clock 12 months old for £27k

or

A new ED 320d for the same

the price is just an example

In three years time you'll have a 4 year old 335d with 110k or a three year old 320d with 100k

The 335d will be worth more, at least 3-4k more. Which will be the difference in you fuel, tax and insurance over that period of time

So you have probably spent the same out of you own pocket just driven a much better car

Some new 325d info.

Just dynoed my stock 325d manual, 218 hp! (185 at the rear wheels)

This engine is way more fresh than it is supposed to be, and not far from the 330d really. But its the same engine, just tuned down a bit.

It can be chipped to 280 hp by ESS, they have a dealer in the UK.

And it has 6 cylinder charm and VERY good milage.

Nice one Dag Johnsen, would have thought it would be more then 218bhp if it made 185 at the wheels thats only a loss of 33bhp. I would think the loss would be greater.

I think 15% on a manual is quite spot on, maybe 18-20% on auto.
