I have tried to pass my cable last week-end and I have found impossible to slip the cable through the lower hole. I cannot push the cable toward the cabin since it has a plastic cover, the only direction I may be able to pass the cable is downward.
Anyone can confirm me that is normal? I own a E90 LCI. Thank you

yup, use a metal wire clothes hanger (straighten it out first) and tape one end of the USB cable to it, and snake it through, makes it a lot easier!

Here's the cable I used from Newegg. Works great, just have to load the driver after Windows finds it. Confirmed working on Windows Vista 32bit, and now Windows 7. Edit: Win7 32bit didn't work right away, had to run installer from Prolific website.

Curious... say you go to the dealer. Wouldn't they wonder why you have a USB cable running to your glovebox?

Install is similar but not quite the same, instead of looking for the cable behind the fuses, it emerges at the bottom of the glovebox where the glovebox meets the carpet (took me awhile to figure this out!). You will have to unscrew the 3 torx screws and move the lower piece of the glovebox down to fish the wire out and up into the glovebox. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the excellent guide OP. The only thing I would add is if you are like me and really struggling to get the usb cable through the hole it helps to see where it is going to come out. On my 09 E90 it was in the same place as in this guide
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ht=usb+install Thanks again and good luck to everyone else.

+1, definitely too small to fit the serial connector through it.

I know wrong forum... but this is the best DIY up so far.
Any details on the 535i install? I'm trying to route my serial->USB cable up for my procede... I removed the ECU quickly just to have a peek, nothing. there's a "perfect" looking ovular hole in the passenger-side-most back panel of the ECU box, but I tried routing the USB cable back there, even a wire coat hanger... and I can't find it poking through anywhere behind the glovebox. One issue though, I'm not sure if I need to remove the panel below the glove box, (I reached up behind it, with what I could feel... and couldn't feel the coat hanger poking through anyways.) On the 535i the rear of the glove box can be removed, to expose a bunch of fuses and little holes in the plastic covered by the firewall. Do you actually need to remove the panel below the glovebox on the 535i? I tried to... I got at 4 screws, but there is a AC power outlet down there (who would have thought????) and that (at least, maybe more points as well) seem to be preventing me from removing the panel to have a better look. Anyone with 535i experience routing the Serial->USB cable from the ECU box to the Glovebox? |

can someone let me know the minimum cable length necessary to do this?
it seems like most are using a 6ft cable, but it seems like the space between the firewall and glove box is far less than that. |

Just a thank you out to the OP for this DIY. Worked like a charm. Pictures were helpful.
