Pah - Ipod! What about standard USB disks for the rest of us that aren't bought into Apple? :-)

You never can win as a car manufacturer.

I would like MTP over USB so that I can play my NapsterToGo tracks with menu selection. The current analogue connector is OK but...

What are your guesses on pricing? Surely not more than an i-pod itself? Who is going to buy a CD 6 player now? They are going to have to give them away.

Amen to that brother!

I've been waiting for this for a while. When I was shopping for a car, I checked out the Acura TL and even they have it hooked up in the glove compartment box, through their navi systems. But of course, I bought a BMW b/c I just love BMW

They were charging about 300 bucks to install it, so hopefully BMW can install it in my 330xi for about the same price.

I'm still looking forward to the Dension solution (end of June according to their website for E90/E91 and other new BMW's).

Assuming the integration aspects are the same [perhaps a big assumption] the dension solution gives you the ability to plug in USB devices. I haven't looked around but I'm hoping there's a nice fat USB hard drive - maybe updatable via WiFi! Then I can keep my music collection in sync whenever the car is near that would be very cool

WOO HOO!!!!!

I have the seamless integration in the X5. Easier to search through songs while driving, especially in a manual car.

According to the promo, it will replace either the CD changer and/or Sirus Radio. Bummer!

Napster to go is the legit service that bought the napster name - sign up for $10 per month and download as much as you want - of course the music stops working when you stop paying but you get all you can eat for the cost of 1 CD a month

Where did you see that? The press release didn't mention anything about it replacing devices on the bus. Is there some other place with more details than the PR?

I take it you can only play the music on your computer?

This is great news. I use my iPod as it is now just hooked up through the AUX input but it is obvious that the SQ isn't nearly on par. What I want next...an iPod with the BMW roundel as the selector wheel!!

About pricing, I wouldn't assume it's cheaper than an ipod. The part itself is going to cost a few hundreds I'm sure, and factorign in 1 or 2 hrs of labor for installation.

Anyone know how much does the e46 kit cost?

MP3?
Why bother, may as well burn REAL quality songs and get much better sound then MP3.

That's the reason why I haven't taken to the "iPod" craze.
MP3 files simply do NOT sound as good as a CD.
It's good file for when jogging or excercising, but when I'm in my car and I've spent hundreds or thousands on "hi-fidelity" equipment, that last thing I want is poor quality sound source.

Take your CD collection and encode them in any lossless format you want and play on iPod. It will be identical to your CD. The only downside is the filesize is going to be considerable larger than a typically encoded (128kbps to 256kbps) mp3. But this is why I have a 60gig iPod.

My point exactly. Hence I encode my own songs at high quality.

Using an iPod does not equate to a poor quality sound source. Playing iTunes purchased songs does however. There is a distinction for the few, like yourself, that care.

I've no doubt that is true, but for many including myself the subtle quality decrease is acceptable over the pure HiFi of CD's - besides if you are after Hi Fidelity - surely road noise + wind noise + traffic are all far more of a factor than the effect of frequency cancellation in the mp3 algorithm ??

Are you refering to the e90 MOST ipod integration kit or the e46??

I sent the press release to my BMW rep and he said he hadn't heard about it himself but assumes it will be around $300 (CDN) installed. We'll see what happens I guess.

dunno if I missed it in the article, but cars can be updated with this system, right? I mean, you don't have to have it built-in to the car, right?
