"Blow By" Oil Residue on Power Steering Reservoir

2007 E90 335i
Auto Trans
71,000 miles
No OCC
BMS Dual Cone Intake

I seem to be getting some oil residue being blown onto the power steering reservoir tank on the driver side near intake cones. Trying to figure out where this is coming from. Any ideas? Could it be diverter valves blowing out oil to atmosphere carried over from PCV loop? I'll add a picture.

Well i dont think its a problem with the reservoir. Its seems like its oil coming from something else.

Sounds like a pinched o ring maybe, check around your oil filter. I had the same problem a few weeks ago.

I second gzim's initial reaction that it's the PS reservoir leaking. Every BMW I've seen in the last 15 years seems to have (or develop) a leaking PS reservoir. You seem pretty convinced that's not it though - can you supply a pic?

I still think it's the cap and/or it's coming from that vent hole.

There could be something going on with a blockage of the internal filter, or something else causing the level to be higher than normal.

Try:

- cleaning it up
- replacing the O-Ring
- insert a Q-tip into that vent hole you can see in the cap and break it off so that there's still enough stalk to pull the Q-tip out. This allows it to vent but dramatically reduces the changes of liquid coming out.

From what I see, I don't think this is coming from anywhere else upwind of the reservoir - I see it all the time on BMWs.

Looks like a leaky cap o-ring for sure. Make sure also that the PS Fluid level isn't to high (check when engine is warm).

OK, I'll try that and report back.

It turned out to be just a loose cap!

cut the old one off with a razor blade, put the new one in its place.

additionally, you will notice there is actually a vent hole in the cap (you can see in the pics above) and oil residue will leak out of that hole, so the o-ring is not always the solution.

My current recommendation is to drain the fluid and replace the entire reservoir every 30000 miles, as it has an integral filter, and you get a new o-ring at the same time.
