3) to remove the two main grill pieces, grab a hold of 2-3 slats with each hand and pull out straight towards you (as diagramed below). The attachment points for the grill is shown below.

How hard do you have to pull on them? I can't get mine out for the life of me. I'm afraid they are going to break if I pull any harder than I have.

A decent amount of force may be required, just make sure you grab a few slats together to distribute the force and to prevent breakage.

other chrome black out

Thanks for the great DIY on the grills, but has anyone also blacked out the chrome trim around the doors? I've seen a DIY on another site about this..

the chrome trim does not easily bend like theblack plastic trim. As you pull it off, it tends to develop creases.

Lower Window Sill Trim - This is the complicated part. Word from the wise... If you are trying to do a trim swap with a 330 owner (taking their chrome trim), you can not reuse this trim. In the process of taking this trim off, it will bend (it is made of metal). When you straighten it out, it will have small bubbles in it, and it wont look good. It will look like someone took a ballpine (sp) hammer and had a few swings at your trim. If you are going to chrome trim, you will have to buy these parts in some way or form. When I did my trim swap with James from bimmerworld, we did not know this, and James was curteous enough to buy me the trim. The black trim from the 325 can be reusable if it is taken off properly. Its made of plastic.

Dude, that mess up was from March of 2006.

I painted my grilles at first, as well. The paint chipped constantly, even with repeated sanding, and applications of clear coat. I finally gave in and bought the black out grilles on ebay. I am MUCH happier now. DIY is cool, but sometimes the ready-made is just easier and works out better in the long run.

you don't need to sand it down. you can just put in some detergent or paint thinner and leave it dipped overnight then the chrome paint came off.
sanded it lightly, primed it and holla. i was in business. chitty chitty bang bang. yeahi yeah

Here is my experience: I have used this instruction my self for one side, I could see my bumper hole for a clip bent a little bit, but it won't crack at all. Certainly, like other people said it won't break anything. Bumper material is like elastic and flexible plastic.

Here is my method to remove grilles.

Just push clip up and pull toward you one clip at a time

Size: 24.7 KB

Just press and pull toward you one clip at a time

Size: 24.7 KB

Hope this work and you can use above method with confidence as well. Don't be afraid to pull with above method.
