Question Which Short Shift Kit (SSK) Is Best?

Hi all,

I've done quite a bit of on this topic, but I haven't come across any threads with a good comparison between the different SSKs on the market. Please point me there if I missed it. Mostly I just see people saying they installed brand X and like it, but that doesn't tell me which one is the best.

I definitely think the stock shifter on my 328i could be better--throws too long, a bit too notchy--so I'd like something that is better in both respects. I also don't want a solution that is higher effort. I think the effort is not exactly light as it is. Honestly, I just want my shifter to feel like what I had on my Honda Prelude, or better

Also, for anyone in Socal (especially San Diego), any advice on a place/person to install an SSK for me?

Oh, I might be interested in getting the CDV delete at the same time. Comments on that welcome too.

Thx!

-Dan

Edit: I just noticed a typo in the poll. Roge should be Rogue.

I just installed the bmw ssk about a month ago, day and night difference over stock. I dont have any exp. with uuc or other brands, but extremely happy with the quality of this product, price, warranty, diy install is very easy and not to mention when you bang gears its just awesome!

Edited: My next mod is cdv for shizzle.

Danimal, I am in the same boat as you are. I am waiting to get a SSK and also the CDV delete. Check out the San Diego Chat Thread, we are trying to get a SD meet this weekend and I am sure some of the people that are coming out have SSKs installed

I just got the OEM Performance SSK installed 2 weekends ago. I love it! I'm using it with the M-tech shift knob. Much better than stock with shorter throws and better feel. I was debating between Rouge and OEM and chose OEM Performance because I wanted to stay with OEM products on my 330i. It was worth the money.

I chose UUC even though I don't have it. A few people on here switched from OEM SSK to UUC and did not regret it

How would you describe the OEM SSK? How does the effort on shifts compare with stock? Is it more/less notchy or the same? Does it make the shifter feel like an M car's?

Thanks,

-Dan

OEM performance ssk... very happy with mine. had to modify the knob a bit tho, i had a tendancy to pull it off by accident when ripping from 1st gear to 2nd gear

AA collaborated with UUC to make their SSK. I love my brothers UUC EVO3 in his e46. I almost got it for my e90, however the DSSR was not available at the time of my purchase so I never got around to buying it. AA sells the SSK + DSSR, so maybe I'll go through them to get the kit.

Too bad autosolutions doesn't make one, although they do custom group buys occasionally. AS is far better than any other out there, check out this review:

i have the oem SSk installed, and wanted to ask for those with it.

does the ssk seem lose when it's in car? say you're in 5th. Mine has abit of wiggle with the ssk side to side, even with it fully in the gate/engaged in gear.

It has been bothering me for some time

BMP ssk will become more smoother overtime, so probably a tiny bit of added slop.

You may need to replace bushing & link at transmission, and any plastic washers in the selector arm & at the join to the BMP stick

was a common problem in e36 maybe e46, and some of the best SSK's for e46 m3 did replace these parts at the transmission

I just installed the UUC ssk and I love it, a bit taller than i expected but still really great, the shortness of the throw makes a huge difference. I have an Xi though and it was a pain in the ass to install it, had to remove the exhaust, rear driveshaft and drop the transfer case down a little bit just to access the bottom of the shifter. A lift is an absolute must for this job. Well worth it though

Do you notice increased vibrations? How much shorter is it than stock?
Did you get a DSSR from UUC as well?

No vibrations present, it is a good amount shorter than stock. The shifter doesnt go back nearly as far when shifting into 2nd, 4th and 6th. Ill try and take a video comparison when i get some time. Did not get the DSSR because i have an XI and they dont make on for us yet.
