Clutch issues @ 30k tuned

Those of you who have been running a tune, how is your clutch doing?
With @ almost 30k "tuned", I had a slip (first one) occur on a rev matched 5th-to-4th downshift accelerate to pass (followed by that awful smell). I don't drag race and I don't have a history of dropping the clutch. I generally sit in neutral at red lights.

From prior experience, my clutches have lasted 80-100k+ without a slip, so this has peaked my interest. A defective clutch? Glazed plate?

I did "5th gear @ 15-25 mph and accelerate test", where the clutched grabbed. I plan on bleeding the clutch today just to be on the safe side.

Any input fellas?

I've heard clutches slipping with tuned 335s. Mine are not close to 30k miles yet so no personal exparience.

No problems here - Could it have been the cdv?

I don't think it's the CDV because at 30k miles, you'd be used to it by now.

This was the issue I brought up when the tunes first came out. With a big improvement over the stock HP and a very big jump for the torque, the life of the clutch will be jeopardized.

I'm at 29,xxx miles and my clutch is still grabbing just fine. However I am stock as far as power goes.

Me too, but I wanted to hear from others who have experience failure.

Not the CDV.

My clutch still grabs with no slip, so I may chalk it up to an isolated incident.

Well, I haven't experience anything today. So I think it may be a one time thing for now at least.

i think our tranny's are the same ones on the m3/m5/m6 no? the ZF or w/e? if so it should be able to handle the torque of a tuned car... however, as sniz said, im expecting mine to fail at some point too

for instance, my friends g35, with only bpu's had his clutch fail at 17k miles... and hes not a bad stick driver... i dont know what you do to have yours last 80k but God bless you! lol

my freinds tC also failed, but thats b/c he put on a turbo kit lol...

Funny you started a Thread about your clutch, I was lazy to post about mines being replaced.....!

I have had a JB2H Installed on the car since 18K, now the car has 39K on it.
Couple days ago cruising in 6th @ 70, car jumps in my lane and wants to do 60, I Down shifted to 5th and changed lanes.....!

While doing so there was a slightly hesitation and then power came on strong
My car had been at the stealer a week prior to that for replacing burned 3rd light lamp and I assumed that
"Oh crap i got the new software update that everyone talks about how there is lag then the power kicks in"

Long story short, it did it again the following day and it got worse, at what point I was sure the clutch was a gunner.

Took it in for testing, my SA told me that it could be "bad fuel, and we will have to charge you 1 hour labor if it turns out to be the case"

Well, no it was not bad fuel, the clutch was in deed slipping and they replaced it, feels great now. He also said that this is an Upgraded/heavy duty clutch that should last more than the old one, something that BMW knows it would have to replace more if everyone decides to drive aggressive and so they have kept quiet about..BS????? Anyway.

Happy Shifting Once again....!

1) Was the tune at fault? Not sure, maybe all that torque?

2) Is it me? I doubt it, Not to say I am an expert driver, but I have got my 12yrs experience and shifting pretty much covered. I have never had such issue in my previous 4 Manual transmission Vehicles, and none of them was bought brand new, let alone the beating they had got.

From what I read, your car is stock maybe you drive it a bit too aggressive? Me my self I must admit that I have downshifted quiet few times on the highway and that i Itend to get up to speed rather quick and then just cruise on 6th.

Honestly I am just happy this happened sooner than 50K.

Cheers.

Ok, so it seems I'm not alone with this problem. Thanks Greek Maverick for the info, that is exactly what happened to me. I'll see if it gets worse. I've been running my tune for all but 3k, so I think the torque (421lbs WTQ) may be a bit much for the Rev. 1 OEM clutch. I'm going to take it in for inspection.

I believe the car has sensors that monitor clutch slippage and throw a CEL when it happens

35k miles tuned. About 500 dyno pulls, a bunch of 400+whp drag stip launches with drag radials, and a whole lotta drifting Original cluch with no hint of slippage.

No CEL whatsoever, The only "Electronic" hint the car will give is when you try to put it on Cruise control and then accelerate/add speed by the cruise control handle and it kicks it self OFF followed by a "ding" Sound and the "Tach & Nidle" icon.

However, per SA and as stated on Paper work order
There was an error code registered in the ECU when they did their tests.

Something like the Golf-T mod/Unclipping of the exhaust flap from the left side of the trunk, no indication to the driver however an error code is stored and able to be found by the dealer.

I had mine changed out with the OEM clutch at 28k miles so I'm with the OP on this one.

My first slip was on the street and then I had one on the dyno.
The BMW tech said that it was fried.

Better your clutch then the transmission. IMHO, its a wear item and with elevated power levels should be acceptable with any factory vehicle. Some people will get lucky and some won't . I'm surprised that it is not common with more 335s considering their power potential. Hopefully they'll cover it in your warranty and everything will be fine. GL

I believe the first one is. Back about a year ago I was at the dealership, they had an E92 335 in for a clutch job. The clutch was already out and I saw it...it was FRIED. The car had only several thousand miles on it. They thought that it was probably the driver abusing it, but they replaced it under good will.
