335i vs........
Been driving around recently and have seen cars such as Subaru's, Vauxhall VXR's etc and wondered (hypothetically speaking of course) whether the 335i would have the legs over these cars.
If we were to draw up a list of cars the stock 335i would beat.....what would it consist of?

I wouldnt worry about Vauxhall VXRs (bar the VXR8). The quickest "normal" VXR is currently the Insignia VXR but according to this:
Remember that Vauxhall quotes 0-60mph where the Germans quote 0-62mph. You might not think there’d be much of a difference but Opel says 6.0sec from 0-62mph for the mechanically identical Insignia OPC, making it nearly a second slower than the Audi S4. |

A 335i has the tunability element due to the turbos but by stock is of course quite a bit slower than an M3.
intercooler, remap, some exhaust work though and this situation can swap around. The OP never asked this question though He asked what cars it's quicker than. Now: Real world is obviously more important than a 0-62 drag. As such, I find the recently launched MSV how fast is interesting: This shows the time over a lap of the bedford autodrome west circuit. People often say the E9x M3 is faster on a track than many cars with a better 0-60 for instance: http://www.howfast.co.uk/leaderboard.aspx The leaderboard would back that up. A non modified 2007 M3 coming in at #44 in the list; above GTR, RS4, Porsche C4S, an Evo 9, Evo X, Cayman S and many other cars. The best 335i by contrast is at place #100! Also, it's not a standard car it's been modded. Sadly this event has only just started so theres only 115 times on there so far but I still think it's an interesting list. Wonder if anyone else knows of anything similar ?

There's also an overall EVO leaderboard with a higher variety of vehicles on the same site:
http://www.howfast.co.uk/Evo-Leaderboard.aspx Unfortunately doesn't list the 335 but it does show that both varieties of E9X M3 are better on this circuit than an E46 M3 CSL which is interesting..

Mapped the 335i really comes into its own.
I was getting times of 4.7 seconds easily with a map on my old one, that was using an AP22 to test it. Not many cars on the road will keep up with that, stock it was more like 5.2, which loads of cars will beat, well loads more. But, are you that bothered? To me it was about how the car made me feel when out for a drive, and the E46 M3 that the 335i replaced satisfied me far more, even though it was not as quick. In the same was the 335d could do it in 4 seconds, it would not really change what it is, it would still be a big diesel with the positives and negatives that comes with that. And in the same respect, mate has a Scooby that is mental, but I wouldn't want to borrow it, let alone own it. |

...not a Porsche 996 Turbo, I found that out the hard way . Looked like I was standing still but that could changed with DP's, FMIC & JB4...unless the 996 was mapped...who knows.

A standard 335i will pull away from from similar powered 4wd Seberios/heave-ho's.. Due to less transmission losses of the BMW, VXR's are no worry generally even with 290-300HP.
Regarding M3's.. The E36 Evo you will beat, the E46 keep up with as long as it's got a slick driver behind the wheel (the 335 is effortless performance) One tuned mate, you will leave E46 M3's easily and keep Up with the E92 quite easily.

For a heavy machine the 335i punches above it's weight.
12.4sec for 0-100mph is not too bad at all. As for Vauxhall VXRs, a 335i will struggle against some of them. Don't forget the Vauxhall VXR8 Bathhurst has 564BHP. Astra, Corsa, Vectra and the Insignia VXR are not as quick but some of those V8 Monaros and VXR8s will have the legs on a 335i but not as much as the power would suggest. The lower tuned ones are still slower. |

12.4 for a press car with 330+HP.
A 300HP is late 12's low 13's

Ok, not very scientific just a bit of fun....
I've smoked a subaru sti (half a cars length) from 0-60 .... kept up with a maserati gt (again from 0-50).... a golf gti mk5 managed to keep up with me, but in the end i took the lead....(from 90...., on a private road) Plenty of Corsas, white vans driven by d*cks, RX8 and Civic Type Rs in my rear view mirror....EASY PEEZY But Bentley Continental GT and DB9 humiliated me on the motorway... |
