Here's the compatibility breakdown, cables listed from oldest to newest:

K-Line cable:
All K-Line cars
All Double K-Line cars
No D-CAN cars

K+DCAN cable with PIN 8 connected:
All K-Line cars
All Double K-Line cars
D-CAN cars without Ethernet interfaces, i.e. 9/06 or 3/07 (depending on model) up to but NOT including 3/09

K+DCAN cable with PIN 8 disconnected:
All K-Line cars
All D-CAN cars
No Double K-Line cars (except with an adapter)

Looks like a got the wrong cable and paid 4x to boot

Actually, I notice you have an 8/2006 build. It's possible that your car is pre-DCAN and actually requires Double K-Line, since DCAN wasn't introduced on the E9x until 3/07. If that's the case, you'll need Pin 8 connected (which will break compatibility with everything from 3/2009) or the adapter from that seller that bridges 7 and 8.
Has anyone had luck in finding the adapter to bridge 7 and 8? I haven't yet found one actually for sale.

Contact eBay seller Automotive Scan Tools. When she sells the cables (currently out of stock) she mentions she also offers adapters. Not sure whether they're free and/or you have to buy a cable from her to get it, but you may as well ask.

Which did you buy? Most will work, you just need to change the pin.

Not sure what you mean by changing the pin. I have soldered a pin into position #8, however I am still getting the same error. The pin is a little thinner than the others, so it I need to test if it is making contact.

Would soldering pin 7&8 togther work? Although it should work now that there is a pin connected to #8

- the cable I have is the one off e-bay ($119), "K + DCAN USB Interface (INPA Compatible)", with a clear plastic OBD connector

the cable also came with a black 'adaptor' - it was just a 16 pin OBD (female-male) with all 16 pins. What would be the use for this?

That's probably the adapter that bridges Pins 7 and 8. It just looks like an OBD-II male to OBD-II female adapter.

answered my own question with the info posted in the driver link above (thanks). Looks like they included a k-line adaptor with my cable (which I tried before adding pin 8, but still got the same connection error, so it must be something else (or the cable is possibly faulty)

Try following the step-by-step again using the driver in the link I posted but before connecting to the car, go into the properties for the device in Device Manager and change the Latency to 1 (I believe the default is 8). Don't worry that some other settings mentioned in the step-by-step might not be available in the properties page with the new driver.

Ugh, apparently the app doesn't work on 64bit Windows 7. I was able to read my car with INPALOAD, but was not able to open NCSEXPER.exe because it requires 32bit.

I just used my other Win7 laptop and now I am at my next point. I have been following the DIY to the T and got to this point.

67. Search for the option “BC_DIGITAL_V” and change the value from “nicht_aktiv” to “aktiv”

When I do the search for that string in the .MAN file, I can't find it. What gives? I also tried searching for a couple other strings that I wanted to change and I can't find those either! Why is my file not having all the options?

When I look at the backup "FSW_PSW.TRC" file I can see everything in it, but when I look at the "FSW_PSW.MAN" it has very minimal.

You didn't follow the steps in the DIY then.

You read the module which creates the trc file. open that file and then save it as a .man file and make the change to the specific line you were talking about.

Save it and then run the program to load you saved .man file.

Please read the DIY manual before coding it.

You obvisously didn't read my post right before that. I read the DIY several times before doing this and during just to make sure that I was doing everything correct. Here were the steps I was following from the DIY:

57. Select “CAS” then select “READ ECU” this is going to create another FSW_PSW.TRC file but only
with the values on for the module we select.
58. Select “READ ECU” this will read all the values from the specific module and place ten in the file
stated above. You will get a screen like this.. you can close it.
59.
60. Leave ncs open and head to the “work” folder.
61. Open the FSW_PSW.TRC file with notepad
62. File>save as FSW_PSW.MAN (be sure to select “save as type” to all files so that it will accept our
“.MAN” extension. If you fail to do so it will just save it as a text file .TXT
63. The “FSW PSW MAN” profile that we used is going to use this “FSW_PSW.MAN” file . this is
where we are going to make any changes and then NCS will write this to ECU.
64. Open the file we just saved with notepad will look like this.
66. The basics are if an option is enabled it will say “aktiv” if its not it will say “nicht_aktiv”
67. Search for the option “BC_DIGITAL_V” and change the value from “nicht_aktiv” to “aktiv”

It is when I am searching for the “BC_DIGITAL_V” in the file I saved. I know I am doing something wrong, but I am not entirely sure what It is. I stopped for now because I didn't want to make any mistakes and was hoping to get some insight from the people on here.

The one that I specifically want to change once I learn how is "BUZZER_HIGH_LEVEL".

Step 57 was an example..

The BC_Digital code is located in the Kombi module. So in Step 57, instead of cas, select Kombi.

Yea, as you become comfortable with it, it only takes about 5 mins to do.

The key is to know what module you want to code.
