How do I keep the radio playing while the car is off?
Pardon the newb question. I like to have the radio playing in the car when I'm in the garage working on something but since I'm new to BMW I can't figure out how to keep the ACC on for more than 3 min to play the radio continuously until I choose to turn it off. At around the three minute mark the power turns off itself and I have to press the start button to get ACC on to get the radio going again. I searched for this but could not find an answer for this.
I hope this is something simple that I'm overlooking and not related to the fact that my AUX input in the center console does not work. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

Why not get that AUX input fixed? It's still under warranty, isn't it? Nothing to do with it though. My radio shuts off after a while when I'm using my AUX input, but it only does so after 20 or maybe 30 minutes.

I do have an appointment at the dealer in morning to fix two air vents which broke very easily and I will definitely have them look at the AUX input too. The 3 minute radio shut off for me is annoying and I was hoping that it might be just a simple setting somewhere.

Yeah, that's what I tried. However the power stays on for only a few minutes then the radio turns off again. For your radio to turn on without the key do you have CA?

It seems odd that your radio would only stay on for a few minutes. However, if you push the start/stop button until your dash lights are on. Your radio should stay on indefinitely then. Or at least until the battery dies.

Hit start button twice without foot on brake.

I would love to learn the answer as well. I noticed this behaviour in my car years back and finally just got over it because I couldn't figure out any way to just keep the radio (well, actually my iPod) playing while I dried and polished the car during cleaning sessions.

I am not sure if this would work. Try it and let me know.
Without CA. 1 Turn off the engine, take out the fob. 2 Immediately restart the engine with no fob inserted, and turn on the radio. 3 Now shut off the engine and the radio remains on. I don't know how long it will remain on though.

If your battery is in good charge condition then just push the volume knob on the radio and it will turn on without any key anywhere, the car running or in ACC. It will stay on until the car ECU detects a battery low charge or for around 20-25 minutes, whichever happens first.

Surely the OP and I cannot be the only folks old enough to remember cars where you just turn the key in the direction opposite that which starts the car to turn on just the radio (no fans, no lights, etc....) and the radio would stay on until you turned the key the other way or the battery ran out??? You might think of it as "drive in movie" mode.

That's the point... the 20 minutes shut down rule is for not to discharge the battery below the cranking voltage. The OP wants to keep the radio playing longer than 3 minutes without using the key/ACC.

Update:
Took the car in today for minor fixes and asked the SA about this. He sated that the time the radio remains on is based on what the computer feels is the appropriate amount of time for the radio to be on and not affect the ability of the battery to start the car. This is just as Technic stated. I guess I never realized how many tasks BMW batteries do and so an optimum charge is always necessary. I'm use to having the radio on for long periods while detailing the car etc. Time to go shopping for a radio for the garage . |
