How do guys limit the risk of having a flat on these and getting stuck?

Carry a summer wheel in the trunk? and maybe buy a hydrolic jack and a lug wrench?

buy a tire inflator kit? don't know how good these things are.

or just have your bmw road side assist handy and have them tow the car?

I recenlty just got a set of non runflats for the winter, and wonder what I should do. Any suggestions?

Call BMW roadside assistance. You already paid for it when you bought the car. You might as well use it.

they dont cover flat tires however - see fine print in owners manual

I carry a fix-a-flat from CT. There is danger than you will much up your wheel when using it, but for the most part I don't care about my winters.

Actually they do.
Last winter i had 5 flat tires and every time all i did was press the SOS button and they towed my car to the dealership.
Never paid a penny out of pocket.

Carrying a spare, jack, and wrench will eat up almost all of your trunk space.

If you get a slow leak from hitting a nail or something like that, you can usually notice in time; just check your tire pressure weekly to make sure you aren't losing air. You can also carry a portable compressor in your trunk to fill any low tires. You can get little tire patch kits that will let you repair small punctures in the field, but with winter tires, finding the puncture can be a problem if a nail is embedded deep in the tread: you need a solution of soapy water in a spray bottle and patience to find a lot of them. If you actually blow out your tire, I'm not sure there's much you can do in the field other than put on a spare or call a tow truck.

I opted for non rft winters and bought a mobility kit from my local dealer. They have a BMW branded one for about $220 and a conti kit for $175

I have phoned them many times about this and they have all said they will tow me. I couldn't find any 18" runflat winters other than the Pirellis so I put non-runflats on because they said they will help.
I have a conti kit just in case though.

The mobility kit comes with a compressor, pair of gloves, a bottle of "sealent" and some parts for the value needle.

For what it's worth, if you actually bent your wheel, the mobilit kit is completely useless. You either carry a spare and a jack, or call roadside assistance to tow your car to a dealer.

In freezing winter weathers, roadside assistance may take up to 3 hours to come at night. (I've had that experience)

CAA maybe a lot faster.

If you bank at TD Canada Tr then you should consider getting a TD Elite Gold Visa card which comes with free roadside assistance plus other Trip Interruption coverage as well. Annual fees of $99 is waived if you keep a monthly balance of $5,000+ in your Select Service A/C.
I used their service once when mine 3 months old E90's fan belts snapped while cruising on the 404 and the tow truck arrived in about 45 mins. The company contract out towing services to regional tow truck co. so they could response to client call more quickly and efficiently.
The bonus is you can tell them to tow your car back to ur place first then call BMW roadside to tow it to the BMW dealer you want the repair done.

I have used that service twice. Once with my previous car and once while in a friends car. Great piece of mind feature.

huh, I guess my SA was just pushing me to get the run flat winters from the stealership and said BMW assist would not cover flats... good to know!

Same here... They said I had to buy the winter wheels and tires from the dealer or they would not be covered.

If you bend your wheels odds are you've had a blowout, in which case your only options are a spare/roadside assistance. That said, a run flat will not save you in a blow out situation anyway. BMW roadside assistance does show up for flats, even aftermarket flats; they just might take awhile. I had to call them once on my summers (aftermarket) with non rft pilot sport 2s on, took them ~1 hr.

i've saw this lady at the dealership. She drove the car in under it's own power with a giant chunk of the rim missing. The runflat tire did it's job by holding the tire pressure and maintaining vehicle control...even after she bounced it off the curb.

btw...i saw this runflat video on youtube. search BMW RUNFLAT. They show the difference of a conventional tire vs a runflat with sudden diflation. Interesting....
