New to me 335D

I bought a 2010 335D last week. I've had a couple tdi jettas and enjoyed good mpg but never thought the combination of decent power and good mpg was possible.

Getting a downpipe installed this week and a walnut blasting, then shipping the ECU to Jarek for a tune.

The car has 77k miles. Going to change the oil, trans fluid/filter, rear diff oil, power steering fluid/filter, air filter, and a coolant flush. The fuel filter was done 10k miles ago.

Are there any other maintenance areas I overlooked?

Oh, picked up a Wagner intercooler also. I am trying to research meth/water injection but don't see any kits specific to the 335d.

It looks like you are off to a good start here. May I also suggest you look into getting the Forge Charge Pipe which replaces the problem prone OEM "Red Boost Pipe". I for 1 have had issues with leaking seals before. Since you are swapping the stock FMIC out with the Wagner, you might as well switch it out while you are in there.

Some tires that can handle that kind of power. She'll be smoken.

Nice Ride! I would replace t-stat with the cooling flush.

I would also do the microfilter too and new wiper blades just to have a total baseline. Unless BMW fixed the packaging mess you want the set for the E90 coupe. They had them packaged wrong and the actual passenger side blade in the sedan set is too long and smacks on the a pillar when using the wipers. Super annoying it is. Also brake fluid too.

If you don't mind where are you getting your walnut blasting done? Ballpark on what it costs? I live in League City and figure this will be required maintenance at some point again.

I'd suggest an EGR block if you've not already done so. Also I might investigate some sort of catch can setup. There aren't a lot of good non-homebrew solutions. But it appears its the combination of engine soot from EGR and Oil from the CCV that contribute to a lot of intake build up.

I'm +1 on knowing of a Houston area company offering cleaning specific to 335D.

I forgot to mention that I ordered the Forge Charge Pipe. I read about some issues with the oem's leaking oil. They had a 2 week backorder for the part.

Changed out the microfilter already. I was interested in the BMS cowl delete filters, but it looks like removing the cowl might lend to have more leaves and junk get into the engine bay.

I dropped off the 335D at ABR Houston today. Getting the buzzken downpipe installed and a coolant flush. Alex shared some of the grief they have had with walnut blasting on the diesels. He said they wouldn't know how bad it was until they take the intake manifold off, but I said go ahead and do it.

I was pretty short on time, but it sounds like the walnut blasting will cost me around $800. The total came to about 1300 all said and done with the downpipe install, coolant flush, and walnut blast. I have seen some other forum members get better prices, but I just want to get it all taken care of at the same time.

I should get it back on Thursday or Friday, and I'll update my final bill. Then the ECU gets pulled and shipped to Jarek for a stage II alphabet delete. While it's parked, I will install the Wagner intercooler and forge charge pipe. Have been debating gutting the SCR cat also.

When the ECU comes back, oil change, trans flush, diff fluid, power steering flush and will flush brake fluid if I can find some decent stainless braided lines.

I am still trying to research meth/water injection. That will be the next venture if I can figure it out. A catch can is on the list too, but again, have to figure out how to rig one up cleanly.

The car already had like new Bridgestone RE050A(i think) in 245/35or40r18 and 275/35r18 on the rear when I bought it. Seems to fit well without any rubbing that I can notice. Will be ditching the runflats whenever these get worn out, but I'm not sure what tires are good these days. I used to run Bridgestone RE-01R on my S2000, but that was a 5 years ago.

Congrats!!

I have to admit I'm really liking the enthusiasm and fanaticism the recent crop of new owners are showing.

I have to wonder is word getting out in certain circles that the 335d is a tuner's dream similar to the early 90s generation Toyota Supra.

Got the 335D back from ABR yesterday. He misquoted the downpipe install as a carb replacement. Ended up only having to pay 275 for the downpipe install and 175 for the coolant flush.

Alex didn't want to do the CBU cleaning until he researched it more. I am guessing that he read over the SIB 11 03 14 for the walnut blasting on the diesel (http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=983574). He said there was a new procedure for the walnut blast that involved taking the valve cover of and that he needed to buy a few new tools to complete the job. I asked what a ballpark price might be whenever he gets the new tools, and he said 1500-1800.

It looks like a pain to do, but anything over a grand and I'll probably wait until it's more necessary to do. I'm thinking of pulling the intake manifold and cleaning it and the swirl flaps, and just installing some methanol/water injection.

Are there any meth/water kits available for the 335D? I've been looking for a diy or anything to make the install a little easier.

Thats a good price on a downpipe install. I'm a decent mechanic and I think if I could pay $275 for a DP install, the pain in the butt factor alone is worth paying $275.

There aren't any specific w/m kits I've seen for the 335d (burger tuning made an unreleased kit a few bought). There are plenty of folks who are running w/m, though the best kits run injection based on RPM instead of boost pressure as our cars make a lot of boost at low RPM's and can cause boost pressure metered w/m kits to inject too much at low rpms causing quenching and not enough at higher. Also there seems to be some evidence that hasn't been duplicated that w/m will clean soot/oil out of the intake. However, w/m will not remove baked on carbon (valves etc) and can only be removed by mechanical means.

Best bets are slowing the build up in the first place, EGR block and CCV catch can. Blocking the EGR and CCV catch can seems to slow build up enough that its a non-issue on the 335d. The use w/m for the performance gains.

With a lack of serious turbo upgrades, once you do a downpipe, SCR gut, tune, your pretty near the limits of the platform. W/M and stacking a piggy back, and a port and clip of the turbos are all that's left. I've seen a few mod the turbos, but it doesn't seem to be that great of an upgrade as folks who run stock turbos are making more power with various other upgrades.

These are my opinions others will differ I'm sure :-)

^ Good Post. Basically sums up all the performance mods available at the moment for our cars. Jess (The banished one), has also beefed up his transmission to handle more TQ. He is also working on a few other things, those will be posted when the time comes

I got the ECU back from Jarek, installed along with the Wagner IC and Forge charge pipe and did some other maintenance (oil change, trans flush, rear diff drain/fill, fuel filter). The car runs great now and feels like a whole new animal. A limited slip differential is on the list of things to buy now, along with meth/water injection, exhaust, etc...

I am getting a couple codes consistently now though:

=Engine / Motor
Fault: DeNOx system function exceeded the maximum time dosage active
Code: 46F2

Fault: Exhaust pressure sensor upstream of the turbine, plausibility pressure upstream of the turbine to low
Code: 4990

I'm not sure if there is another sensor I need to remove or what else it could be.

NC did you use the clamps that came with the Forge pipe or did you upgrade them like some have done?
