Leaking vapor barriers, fixed!

Recently I bought an E90 328xi as a restoration project that I could use a daily driver/winter car ..as the E92 M3 is amazing but the fuel economy is not friendly to my wallet nor does it enjoy a Chicago winter. The car had been sitting for a long time and had clogged sunroof drains, cracked grommets in the firewall, and bad vapor barriers in the front doors.

Using some thick plastic and a roll of 3M window ribbon seal, I made my own vapor barriers to replace the foam ones which were no longer sealing and falling apart.

Water used to drip down from behind the door panel, onto the door sills and down into the carpet. Now its fixed!

Thought I'd share

Just curious why you didn't go with a replacement, aren't those barriers cheap?

Also interested in your cracked firewall grommet pics.

What about noise in the cabin ? This plastic material seems bound to flap in the door, and provide a lot less sonic insulation than the foam that was there.

Maybe he didn't want the BMW ones to fail again.

This seems to be another thing BMW can't get right. My e46 has had leaking vapor barriers for most of its life. I've resealed them multiple times. I have them pretty well sealed now.

Couldn't get any pics of it, it was the one that runs in to the left of the brake pedal, there was a small tear in it

Masked off the area and used just a little bit of FlexSeal, it goes on like paint but dries into a rubber.

The harness that passes through that grommet was replaced at some point, so I'm assuming whoever installed the new harness tore the grommet by accident..
