$15000 to fix engine per dealer (Options) PLS ADVISE

What are my options, my engine has gone bye bye according to the dealer and will cost $15000 to fix. My insurance won't cover. Trying to see what Gap insurance will do, but it that is a no go, what are my options, can I still buy an extended warranty? Car is a 2007 BMW 335i E92 with 45000 miles.

Engine failure is really rare regarding N54s. Did you throw a rod or something? Hydrolock? What happened?

Had an oil leak for about the last month and half (cracked valve cover). I did a oil change at dealer they said I could probably drive it for about a month with the oil change and come back in about a month to fix the oil leak (cost 1400 to fix). While I was going to get another oil change to buy me some more time to get the $1400 to fix the leak, car broke down and won't start. Took to a local shop they couldn't get it started, towed to dealer and they told me it going to cost $15000 to fix said the timing belt skipped or something and got sucked into the camshaft and cracked it something like that. Previously my serpentine belt snapped 3 times in about a month and a half the second time it was fixed by the dealer.

Buy a moped.

No wait, that's what I'd do if I needed to replace my engine for 15k

15k to fix an engine? LOL

Buy a used one, or just push your car off a cliff and buy a new car. Seriously, tell your dealer to F off

is my best option buying a used engine? Can I buy a extended warranty and take the car to another dealership? I really need go advise I like the car too much and have put too much "mod money" into into to just let it go like that. Plus I'm drinking my pain away right now lol

45,000 miles as said in the original post lol

I'm with everyone else - buy a used motor. If you have a friend that's a greasemonkey, bribe him/her to help you. That's what I would do... may end up buying a cheap POS to get me through in the meantime.

Good lesson learned here for everyone... don't put off any oil leaks will cost you big in the long run despite the probable low chances.

Good luck!

45000 miles. Is my best option buying a used engine for around $5000 or buying extended warranty and taking the car to another dealer for repairs?

Please video tape the conversation with your SA when you ask to purchase the extended warranty.

He's being sarcastic bro. BMW isn't going to grant you an extended warranty on a dead engine.

I would suggest to get a clear diagnostic in writing detailing what went wrong and the full list of parts that need to be replaced. Take pictures if you can.
I never heard of a timing belt ( ...it's a chain actually = metal) "skipping", this is insane. If true then it might have to do with improper tension/ chain tensioner improperly adjusted. This is highly unlikely to go unnoticed. Same applies to belt drive. Both scenarios pinpoint in the same direction: bad and incompetent service/ vehicle not properly maintained.

Take what you can gather and contact BMW of NA for advice and a 3-rd party for a second opinion.

****Keep us informed.*****

PS. Real OEM shows a complete N54 at ~ 11k, not sure if this comes already assembled or not.

Find a local Indy through your Regional Section that is capable to handle a full analysis and get a second opinion. This sounds very odd. Then, if the Indy says an engine replace is required find a used engine. GL, that really sucks!

I was thinking the same thing its a chain and why would the dealer let him drive off with an oil leak

Timing BELT??? No single BMW uses a belt to drive their valvetrain, they are all chain driven. If it were me I'd look into this matter myself...
But then again it could be possible that the chain might have jumped, I'm pretty sure the tensioners get a little help from oil pressure?

...there is a play there but not enough for a full jump. If the tensioner is the cause this is highly unlikely to happen suddenly and to go unnoticed. Doesn't have to do with the oil leak in my opinion.
It is a very strange story. Knowing what BMW &^%$*&^ technicians are capable of (at least here in MA) nothing would surprise me.

A "broken timing belt" and a "cracked camshaft"? Really? BMWs don't have timing belts - those are in Hondas and Toyotas. Sounds like a load of horse manure to me. Unless you have bent valves, a cracked piston or cylinder wall, or some other major damage, it's fixable. Also, if the engine turns over, it's not that serious, particularly if there are no holes in the block. Does it make noise when it turns over, like something banging against something else? Oil starvation will spin bearings, causing a loud knocking noise, but the engine will sometimes still run. If the engine froze up due to no lubrication, that's a more serious matter. Timing chains and camshafts - even the entire cylinder head - can be replaced. I'd definitely talk to an Indy or another dealer for a second opinion.

I had a similar experience with a Turbo Beetle in 2000 where it spun a rod bearing at less than 1,000 miles (no fault of my own). It was fixed by replacing the engine block - a "long block" (block, crank, pistons, etc.) and all the ancillaries were removed from the old engine and put on the new one. Wanting to replace your entire engine sounds very suspicious, especially based on the information you've provided.
