need help identifying this clutch related noise
Noise happens only when the car is rolling at very slow speed below 5km/h (3mph) when I release the clutch.

Hard to tell from the vid but it sounds like your dual mass flywheel.
I'm pushing over 450wtq and mine is wearing out pretty fast and is getting loud also. When you turn the car off without holding in clutch does it make a similar noise? |

I'll try it in the morning and report back.
So basically, put Neutral, turn off car? From what I remember, it doesnt. But I'll try both Neutral and in first gear (when releasing clutch right before turning car off) |

When the car isn't moving and I depress the clutch the same way, I dont hear it. It's only when the car is moving (very slowly) that I hear it.
When I turn the car off, the car isnt moving and I dont hear it. The noise really happens when the clutch is between 70%-100% depressed. It's a bit like there's something loose when the collar goes into the gear. But I dont hear it at higher speeds >20MPH. |

If this happens when the clutch is 70-100% disengaged it could be the throw-out bearing. How many miles on this clutch and do you do a lot of stop and go? From the video it sounds like marbles rattling but that may not be accurate. T/o bearings often squeal or grind as they start to fail. There are only three rotating parts that move in the clutch - the disc, the tines in the pressure plate and the t/o bearing (flywheel too, of course). It could be the flywheel but if you don't hear it as you turn the engine off (with clutch pedal up) then it's not likely to be the culprit. It sounds like you may be due for clutch work. |

Clutch was replaced less than 3 years ago, about 50k km ago (30k miles ago). Car is used 50/50 city and hwy, occasional spirited driving, never tracked. It really sounds exactly like the vid, no squeak and no metal grinding noise. I dont hear anything when turning off the car and then releasing the clutch.
Car is bone stock, no mods at all. Thanks for your replies, just hope I can do it myself. Really dont want to spend 1k at the indy or stealership. |

I'm tending to agree with Miller535 on the flywheel. I've endured my share of flywheel noises on my E34 535i but this one sounds different. In the video it sounds a little like a snorting animal, somewhat rhythmic. However, if you don't hear the "death rattle" when you turn off the engine with the car in neutral and clutch pedal not pressed, it may be unrelated.
Try a few diagnostic tests. Start her up and put her in neutral. Gently vary the RPM and listen closely (hood open); do you hear any kind of clattering, like marbles in a can? Raise RPM a little and step off the throttle. Try and make it happen without rolling the car. Other option, jack up the front end, place on jack stands and start the engine (please be careful!) with gearbox in neutral. Listen closely for the same sound. If it's not the flywheel, I'm stumped; sorry. Let us know what you find. |

Thanks for the advice, I'll try jacking the front up this wkd. I'll report back.
Many things to do on the car, change rear pads, front rotors, pads, replace OFH gasket, replace 2 cracked mags or whole set while at it, replace parking brake shoes, serpentine belt, shaft seal gasket... *shrugs* |
