shaving / removing side repeater?

Has anyone tried shaving / removing the side repeater and replacing it with a color matched blank like the front reflectors? Just wondering, since it is not a DOT requirement here in the states to have them, and it would look cleaner without them. I think that this would be a good opportunity for an aftermarket vendor to mass produce these, but I'm not sure how they would look. Shaving would look great, but requires bodywork. Not so much a color matched piece?
