Well said!

I had a couple of Brodit mounts on the 5 series for Sat Nav and Ipod.

Top kit and DSL Developments are good sellers.

Easier said than done.

The car is leased to me but under strict conditions on what I can do with it!
My HR dept will deduct from my salary any damage done to car not made good. After I've butchered the dash I would have to unbutcher it.....

My Tomtom mounts in a bracket which is stuck to the dash just to the right of the steering wheel.

I hard wired the supplied lead into a 12V supply and poked the wire into the joint between the aluminium trim and the dash.

It's neat and the bracket is hard to spot from the outside - it's also on the same side as the little satnav compartment!

I got the mount from http://www.pdamods.com/products.asp?cat=23 and if I had any idea how to make them a bit smaller, I'd post the couple of photo's that I've just taken!

I've always hard wired TomTom's into my lease cars and I've never had any issues, I just remove the evidance before they go back. If you look at the DIY section there are plenty of tips on how to remove the trim.

I hardwired my Sony and fixed it onto the plastic cover in the dash, ran the wire to the ciggy lighter where I crimped a female extension on.

Also the Sony has an active cradle so you just slide the nav unit on and off when you park up, you don't piss about attaching power cables or TMC cables etc.

This is exactly what I wanted for my Tom Tom 520, a docking solution which I could fasten to the car and just drop the Sat Nav in when I needed it. Bloody Great!

Hey gIzzE

Your solution looks perfect and very neat.

How did you attach the mount onto the dash?
Where you say you ran the wire to the ciggy lighter and crimped a female extenstion on - what do you mean?

Thanks

I just used the suction pad stuck onto the plastic bit of trim that is in the middle of the dash.

That bit of trim is only £14 to replace, so you could glue an active cradle to it, drill a couple of holes in it to run the wires through and know it is only going to cost you a few quid to replace when you sell the car on again.

The ciggy lighter is 12v switched with the ignition, so I bought a female ciggy lighter that gives two outputs from halfords for £3.99, it is designed to let you plug your phone and an ipod or similar into one socket.
I cut of the end that plugs into the ciggy lighter and attached crimped the bare wires onto the 12v and ground on the back of the cigarette lighter in the ashtray.
This meant I could just drop the nav power down behind the radio and plug it into my new, hidden power socket.

To remove the trim around the gearstick to get to the back of the lighter you simply slide a blunt knife under the trim near the arm rest and wiggle it up and off.
You need to remove the gearstick gaiter and then it just pulls up as it is on 6 pins.
There may be 2 screws under the gearstick gaitor, but pull it up and you will see if they're there or not, I can't remember.

Takes about 20-30 minutes if you don't know what you're doing and about 5-10 mins if you do, very quick and very neat.

I have used a 2 into 1 and plugged it into the power outlet in the armrest for the DAB and the Pogo Alert and run the wires down the sides and under the dash

I would second the bean bag mount.

http://www.electroxpress.com/product...FV8B4wodUlIlAQ

Very simple, totally portable and no matter how hard I corner it does not move. Works with ANY device that has a suction cup and can be placed anywhere on the dash to suit your requirements.

I was cautious when I first saw it as I thought it would slide everywhere but in use it has been fantastic.

I've got something very similar bought from Halfords: it's superb, doesn't slide at all.

Sounds quite easy to do then. Didn't realise that part on top of dash could be swapped out so easily and is only £14.

Fantastic thanks for the info So did you drill a hole in the top and run the wire down behind the radio?
