i know that many people on this board say that modding a 328i is a hassle, engine wise, whats the most power i can get out of it, and which mods. thanks

Intake, exhaust, and a PBX for a few HP gain and improved throttle response. It's not a hassle, but the dollar-per-HP figure isn't great.

What jopa said. You aren't going to gain much and it's going to cost you way more than it's worth.

You can get about 250-260 with but that's after a couple thousand. My 325 makes 218hp at the wheels on a Dynojet (it give very generous hp numbers). It made about 187 hp stock. I'm about 10-15hp shy of what a 330 can do stock. I did the 3-stage intake manifold and tune and it costs about $2000 all said and done.

ya i was thinking of a BMW performance exhaust, then a k&n CAI, and a chip. can i get all those three and then a tune by active? i heard active is tuning e90 328's.

I have bms pbx, afe intake, and some scoops.
about $700 for...maybe if im lucky....on a cold day with perfect conditions.... 10hp.

So thats about $70 per HP.
Sounds crappy but to be honest I'm pretty content with my little mods.

Try a AFE intake should get you about 15 HP to the wheel seriously recommend getting it.. YOU WILL FEEL the HP .. its incrediable

Although it is harder to get horsepower from the N52 engine, there are a few mods that have been extremely successful and have been proven to increase horsepower, torque, and throttle response. I would recommend that you check out the BMS Powerbox, AFE intake, and the Remus Exhaust system for your 328i. I'll shoot you over a PM with more details!

i think in terms of performance improvements I think pbx was the best mod ive ever done to my car. Gas pedal tends to be more responsive no lag. So i would definetly suggest getting pbx.

If you want real performance, you need a full exhaust system with headers (my MMW system is the only one to put up a dyno to show gains)
Paired up with an intake, with supplemental air source, and a tune - you WILL gain some good power.

If you go further and to a 3 stage manifold upgrade, you will be in very good shape

i just want to say ive been somewhat tracking your progress and am very interested in your results. when i first discovered the thread about the three stage i immediately started pricing parts, till i read further and found out about the tune. i just recently decided to keep my car as a future toy for when i get a daily driver, and i think i will most definitely end up with the three stage intake manifold one day. so please keep us lowly 325 drives informed. and thanks for the great posts and heads up on the possibilities.

I was under the impression the 3 stage intake manifold (from the 330i) was a no go. ECU for the 328 cant regulate the intake ... Speculating, but you would have to flash the ecu and reprogram for this hardware, no? That was one of the first mods I considered doing but found little hard data supporting its use.

My bad, disregard ... new to the forum and Ive spent the better part of a full day reading all 945 pages of posts relating to the tune/3stage intake mod.

Wow that's a lot of reading,
In short:

Yes you can do the swap in a 328, and a tune is needed in any case to regulate the intake (325 or 328)

it will semi function without a tune, but not fully.

You gain 8whp without a tune, but you will have flat spots in the power band.

my engine is untouched, completely stock and the whole power ban feels flat, and i have a manual. i think bmw did it on purpose to make the 330 seem better. in all reality the 06 325 has decent power just unimpressive acceleration.
