JoosyJoos, thanks for such a compliment my friend. I always hope that in the end these reviews shed light on products that people may or may not want to buy. In the end these reviews are simply a source of information.

The funny thing is, last winter I drove from Chicago to Denver and back for Xmass. At that time the midwest saw one of the biggest blizzards in the recent years. On the way back, my car was registering air temperatures of -10F to -17F. That's pretty damn cold.

At the same time, my oil temperatures dropped to around 180-190F. Normally the car operates at 230-240F in the extreme summer traffic jams in Chicago.

Thanks for the review though.
JPSlick, thanks for reading the review. The install is really not hard at all. There is a little prep work, but this was easy compared to my methanol and nitrous install. No wiring anywhere!!!

BrianMN, you are welcome my friend. I think STETT is planning a group buy shortly. I am not sure of any specifics though.

yeah man, the stock oil cooling setup on my '99 M3 has never seen over 210 and thats with the oil cooling my large turbo.

I have never ran it on a road course (one day I hope!) but on hard street driving or stop in go in 110F heat it still doesnt go above 210.

Bakeme521, the stock thermostat is inside the adapter that was removed from the oil filter location. There is absolutely no way it could be changed out from what I can see. I will take a picture of it if you want?

robbie211, thanks buddy! I am not sure I could see a situation where they would not drop with this kit. It addresses the real source for the high oil temperatures in my opinion.

kenneth, thanks a lot for the kind words. I always try to write a review with quantifiable results. I feel like this can give others real insight into whether or not this part fits your needs.

I am not sure how to approach getting a lower thermostat on the AR kit. It would require a thermostat delete like STETT is doing. Maybe STETT will sell a thermostat delete or optional 180F thermostat kit?

If you did that, it would still retain the stock OC thermostat (which is built into the OEM front plate oil filter housing) and adding the other inline thermostat would be kind of silly. This would mean you have the factory one that opens at ~240°F-250°F and then oil would go downstream to the Stett 180° thermostat and already be hot. They way they did it is the correct way.

Too bad no one has simply come up with a new OC thermostat to directly replace the factory one.

BTW, does this new thermostat allow it to flow slightly at all times, or is it either open or shut?
RaceyBMW, thanks for the kind words. When I look at the thermostat it has a spring up top and a bar style down bottom. I am not sure if you can get flow through the spring below 180F. Maybe STETT can answer that? Judging from the shape of the warmup, it appears it does operate as stock thermostat. There warmup curve is not linear, but seems to start to level as it approaches the 180F thermostat temp.

The only thing I can think of is that BMW wants the high temperatures for emmisions reasons. I understand the carbon argument, but I cannot understand the logic for a 230-235F oil thermostat.

Of all the PICS! I just wish we could change out the thermostat, that would be a neat solution.

When you see how tucked away it is in there you will understand why it cannot be replaced. It is molded into the actual housing.

How practical would be for a company to make an entire oil filter housing replacement with a new thermostat?

My real opinion? Very, very expensive. It would be for N54s only and no other application whatsoever. STETT did thist he right way in my opinion.

It can be unscrewed from the housing though can't it? You can see them here on the left side of the front cover.

Hmm, ok last question. (sorry).

How practical would it be to somehow force the OEM thermostat open always.... and then possibly install an aftermarket thermostat somewhere else?

I def. agree with that. I realize now that the thermostat is inside the outside cap but it would be pretty cool if someone made an aftermarket one too see what the differences would be with just the stock oil cooler. Do you think stett would sell the thermostat housing separately? If so theres a place around the corner that makes custom steel braided lines that can be any lengths with any time of fitting on either side. With custom lines make it could be possible to hook the stocker up to the stett housing.

OR

If stett or other vendors out there are looking for something to do, MAKE AN AFTERMARKET THERMOSTAT HOUSING THAT HOOKS UP TO THE STOCK OIL COOLER!!

To be honest, I am not sure those screws remove the thermostat or not. I didn't try to take apart my stock part, so I am not sure. I can look more closely at it over the next couple of days.

JP, I am no sure it is wise to start to go forcing it open or closed. I personally am not comfortable with that type of a mod on something as critical as oil.
