24-70mm f/2.8 is better but it has a smaller range.

What does "better" mean?

Lots of Canon shooters are L-snobs. Nothing, but the sharpest, fastest, professional-grade lens is good enough. I suffer from this sickness myself, but I recognize that these $1K+ works of art aren't necessarily the best tool for every job. A new photographer may very well want something light and inconspicuous (which most L lenses decidedly are not).

Canon makes some very good mid-priced zooms. Depending on what you'd like to shoot you can do very well with the newer 18-55IS kit lens, the 50/1.8 (both of which are around $100) or one of the many fine wide angle, mid-range or telephoto zoom lenses now available for the Canon mount in the $300-500 price range. Provide a little bit more info about what you're looking for and you'll get several recommendations in this range.

for a everyday lens, 24-70 is not wide enough for your shoot IMO. Also, the 24-70mm has no IS feature, and if this is your ONLY lens, you will have trouble shooting in-doors, unless you have external flashes. (then again, this 24-70mm has f2.8, which is fast enough in most of situations)

For a good "everyday" fast lens, get the 17-55 f2.8 IS USM. I just bought it and Canon is offering rebates on them as well!! Only $960 for the lens!! Its an absolutely amazing lens, fast, sharp and light weight (considering the aperture range it has).

Unless you're getting a FF camera, 24-70mm just doesnt cut it. OR, you can get the 24-70mm..

Also, I dont recommend the 50mm f1.8 as well. I'd recommend 50mm f1.4 if you're looking to get some real fast/sharp lens. the build quality of the 50mm f1.8 is a JOKE. again, it is not very well built and the quality is moderate IMO. The best performing aperture range is at 1 or 2 levels above, so at probably 2.0 or above is the actual performance/capability of the 50mm f1.8. 50mm f1.8 is $400, which is not too bad for a prime lens.

and believe me, the build quality on the f1.4 is night and day.. of course, if you get the dough, 50mm f1.2 L lens is absolutely amazing and fast! You can almost take that in any dance club situation with some tripod. (ok, i'm exaggerating, but you get the point)

PS. You can still find canon 20D now?? arent they out of production for a few years now?? (correct me if I'm wrong).

f2.8 vs f4

nuff said...

consider a 17-40 f/4 L if you don't need the faster f/2.8

with a crop body like the 20D it'll be just right for every day shooting. Then you can get a longer lens if you feel like you need more telephoto zoom... but for novice shooters I was always taught to not shoot anything you couldn't get close up to anyway.

It depends on what your budget is as well as what you're looking for- zooms, primes, telephotos?? For starter I would recommend picking up a copy of the 18-55mm IS lens. It's about $100-120 or so on ebay. Shoot with it for a while and find out what your needs are- do you constantly shoot at the 55mm end or the 18mm end, etc. After you know what you need, you can splurge on more expensive lenses (primes, zooms or telephotos). A cheap but good and fast lens is the 50mm 1.8. It's about $120 now at most stores (recent price increase on all lenses) but you can pick it up for cheaper on craigslist or ebay.

Oh ya about the camera i has it like 3 years ago already, but never touch it because i don't have time to play with it to know how to use it. All i use is just my digital camera.
Now it seem like i really like to take pictures so i'll try to learn how to use my own stuff, thank for your advice.
