They mainly use a master key to open the window and reach the OBD port.

I was thinking about writing to BMW in an official capacity regarding the thefts of the vehicles. Thing is I wouldn't be able to post the reply.

Maybe I'll just get a letter done as a private owner and see what the official slant on this is.

Personally I'd prefer you did a letter to BMW in your official capacity, even if we do not find out what the reply is.

Plenty of people on Pistonheads have written letters as a private owner and all they got is some hopeless response that "BMW meets current standards" with regard to security, ie "not our problem, mate"

The below is "stolen" from pistonheads and is in relation to thefts via obd...
BMW fixed the issue back in 2010, then another way in was found which has since been addressed in v45 and onward firmware. How long it will take the scummers to hack back in is open to question.

The chances of BMW doing a recall are very slim. A software update takes most of the day to complete and costs up to £200. BMW don't like flashing the firmware if they can help it because of the risk in frying the Cas unit.

If you are still under warranty and you have a problem with your bluetooth not working properly for example. The whole car will get a firmware update under warranty. This would include the Cas module.

Any response is likely to be better than the hopeless efforts from BMW reported to private customers so far.

I read that. So far I have only seen one person write this. 11-plate vehicles are also being stolen. Think more confirmation is required before we believe it.

Sounds good to me, as an officer of the Law i think they may have to stand up and have another look.

If we all use the letter/or similar too and we ALL send it then surely something has to be done, if we do this in large numbers surely it cant go un noticed

I would love to think that this would be the case-however,as Mart1000 is I presume aware,BMW have rejected calls to address this issue by AVCIS in recent months.
I think that coverage/negative publicity in the media will be the only thing that eventually makes BMW act-although this could be a double-edged sword leading to more cars being stolen-still worth a try though.

At least this would set the alarm off as it would trigger the door open sensor. The trusted brick seems to be a quicker and better way of getting into the car. Try to lock and alarm your car. Then use the key in the fob to unluck and open the door.

I think your right, until BMW start getting a bad name in the press they are simply not interested in their customer!



On another note, im looking at upgrading / fitting a second siren as the BMW one is utter ****, it would not wake me if i slept next to it!

True. I remember being around the Golf MKIV/Skoda/SEAT/Audi forums back in the day and we all knew about the ridiculous security flaw with these cars but it was rarely discussed due to careful moderation. Then all of a sudden it was on Watchdog and a lot of people got very nervous very quickly.
