Disk brakes "tar"

hello; i got a second car recently. A pre-owned Carrera 4 with 30k miles.

Every time I wash the car carefully go to disk brakes for cleaning the same way i do on my Bimmer. The difference is that when I roll back from the yard to the parking spot it drips from inside the disks a black (sometimes brownish/black) sticky residue.

The first couple of times i thought that the car was not well washed so i was running into old residues. So I bought the 3M brake disks cleaner, widely recommended, and I did it 2 times with not much coming out. Now after 10 or 15 washes it keeps coming every weekend. As a note is fare to say that the car is driven by my wife most of the week, no racing or aggressive braking at all.

Question: it could be the drilled shape of disks that hold dust? It could be cheap brake pads? Or is just Porsche normal wear of breaks?

Probably because most of us don't have much Porsche experience. Did you try searching a Porsche forum?

I'm really not sure. You could maybe use a blower to try the brakes after you wash so nothing drips?

I went to some Porsche's forums and they all suck. Nothing like the way Bimmerpost organize subjects and threads.

so your saying the rotors (inside) have caked up brake residue that drips after you wash the car?

what a pain that can be...

I would say pull the wheels off and try brake cleaner to get rid of all of it. I'm not sure if that 3m stuff is the same as regular brake cleaner found at any parts store?

Thats where I would start.

Yap, that exactly how it looks to be. Greasy, oily, black dark sticky droppings....almost look like old oil coming out of an engine.

I know is a pain, but I guess i will need to take them all off and see for myself whats inside and where....

Sounds like a normal mixture of brake dust and pad adhesive, rinse with water, apply a wheel cleaner (P21S or Sonax) rinse away debris and dry with a blower.

You could also try ceramic brake pads next ime they need to be changed

Just rinsing doesnt get this stuff off. I get it all the time as well. It takes something very strong to get off and I only know this from basically ruining my wheels clear coat getting it off.

Agreed-the idea of rinsing is to get rid of any loose residue, the wheel cleaner (like Sonax, P21S) will remove brake dust etc. all as per posting

I have owned Porsches for the past 9 years, including a 996 C4S and I have never seen anything like that. I would get it on a lift and take a closer look to see if there is a leak that may be causing this to happen. If it is actually coming out of the inside of the rotors on both sides of the car, I would suspect inferior brake pads, or maybe an issue with the pads dragging on the rotors. If you want a good independent source for some feedback, contact: http://www.pedrosgarage.com

It sounds to me that it has cheap brake pads on it. And it happens on EVERY single wheel. So I've take of the table that it could be some sort of leaking.

I'll contact predro's

Thanks for advice and comments.

Yap, those perforations are nasty. They also keep the baked dust on it.
Just this weekend I've tried a degreaser combined with regular disk brake pads cleaner and got out some serious stuff out, but at the end it just happened again. Sticky, black tar came out when I rolled out and I have to dry out again with a clean clothe.

Will try next weekend with some of those products mentioned here.

Do you guys know if Sonax or P21S could damage the clear coat of the rims? I just want to try the product without having to take out the wheels.

Having used P21S wheel cleaners on my Porsche in the past, I can confirm it will not hurt the clearcoat. Now I do not use wheel cleaner anymore. Since I keep them well waxed with P21S after using P21S Gloss Enhancing Paintwork Cleanser, the brake dust comes off easily enough that I can avoid the added cost of wheel cleaners. And I figure one less chemical is better for the environment, too.

Both are great products. Both are 100% safe. Neither will harm your wheel. p21 is great for every day cleaning. Sonax can handle anything from just a dirty wheel to caked on death tar.
