Retainer clip on rear brake caliper...missing???

Just noticed couple days ago that the clip was missing off my rear caliper. How could this have happened considering I've never touched the brakes. What purpose do those clips/retainers serve and is it safe to drive until I get another one?

I've been driving now for a while without that clip on/off the highway with only one issue which I don't know if its related. When I go in "reverse" (and only in reverse) and then stop on the brake (don't have to stomp on it heavily) i hear a clunk which seems to be coming from the rear of the car. When I then go forward, I don't get the same noise...

Anyone know if this missing caliper clip/retainer is to blame?
