Where is my ashtray/power outlet?

Just picked up car today (will post a separate thread for that later when I'm not running on 3 hrs of sleep), and I noticed I have no ashtray/power outlet? I don't care about the ashtray since I don't smoke, but I do care about the power outlet. I thought all US 3 series comes with the smokers package?

You should have a power outlet under the dash passenger side.

Yes I know about that one, except for my cell phone charger is too tall so I can't close the the arm rest with it in I'll have to find a right-angle plug.

That doesn't answer my question though. Why don't I have an ashtray and cigarette lighter?

Hmmm... I'm having trouble picturing where that is. Car is not easily accessible right now. Put it in storage for winter

Garage List
The 2nd power outlet should be just under the glove compartment on the left side. Not readily accessible except by the passenger.

PS: you bought a car just to put it in storage right away for the winter??

You will find it on the left side of where the glovebox is located- you may have to reach deep as it is well hidden! But that's where it should be.

Thanks! I'll have to give that a try.

I drove it for 8 hours home I got a good deal on it, so I had to pull the trigger right now. It's OK, I can wait another month.

They also sell a power cord that plugs into the emergency flashlight socket that has the "normal" power socket on one end.

Wasn't that change made a couple years ago? It's obviously too small to realistically put anything inside, it was cost cutting. Problem is it's up-front and noticeable. How much could the removal of the ashtray/lighter socekt have saved BMW, maybe $10 per vehicle? imho that's the logical place to plug in a cell phone, GPS, or anything else. Any car you rent is going to have the socket located there.

I think like three people have explained in detail where the second power out let is. It is under the glove compartment door on the lower left hand side. It's not visible from seating position. You have to plug a car charger upwards into it. This is so much better than the unsightly tray door open/ashtray/lighter exposed look.

Here are the photos, the first photo you can see where I plugged in the power outlet, that is taking a photo from the passenger's seat so the left wall is the area right underneath the dash to the right of the gear shifter and under the glove compartment.

This second photo shows the outlet itself

Does that thing have a plastic plug that goes into it when not in use? I've never noticed it on loaner cars.

Yup, it's under the glove compartment. No, it does not come with a plastic stopper for the outlet... bought that from parts for some change. Bought my car new btw, so no one stole it.

Holy SHi-Aite!!!!

If that's there, I'm gonna slap myself.

Never knew that. Guess I should peruse the manual more carefully next time.

Thanks for the PICS bud.
