MHD Flash - what just happened?
Hey all, something weird just happened while I was flashing my car with stage 1 93. Plugged in to the OBD all fine, purchased the flasher module and map, backed up my ECU and pressed the stage 1 93 octane button. As expected, I had the instruction that the time remaining was 18 to 38 minutes. I had the ignition on with everything else switched off, and the tablet in aeroplane mode. Got to 47% with 9 minutes to go, then I got an ECU write fail, please wait message. The light on the OBD plug went out and everything stopped, including the fuel pump. I don't have a JB4 and I had a charger connected.
So I waited, and nothing happened. I clicked the back button on the tablet, and I was presented with something along the lines of "perform emergency rewrite" or similar. So I hit that option, and then and only then did I get the "flashing" message show up, then 30 seconds later it said it was complete and my software version was stage 1 93 octane v 5.1. During the 9 minute period, the message did not read as flashing, it read as something like "preparing ECU". Can anyone explain what happened? The car runs fine and does appear to have more power. I just don't know if I got some screwed up hybrid of half stock and half MHD or something weird like that. |

Some battery chargers are more like trickle chargers and cannot supply the voltage required during such a long write especially when the fuel pump is on the whole time.

The charger I was using was an 8 amp unit but it may not have been connected long enough I guess. I just don't understand how the flash could have taken so little time in this recovery/emergency mode. I took it out for a 20 minute drive and did a couple of wot runs, and all was fine, but in the end I decided to flash back to stock. One last question though (and I'm sure this has been addressed) but when I flash back to stock, if I have backed up my ecu then it is using my specific stock map right? When I backed up the ecu that only seemed to take 10 seconds as well. Weird.

I always pull the fuel pump fuse when doing a new/full flash. Never used a charger and never had any issues. Not to say I won't use one next time. Just lucky I guess!
