New budget £400 for 335i?

Cant believe it, is it true... the 335i emits 228 g co2/km, has gordon the gopher increased VED to 400 quid?

How unfair the band g starts at 225 g! and plenty of normal cars fall in this bracket, hell my 2.0 litre mondeo is nearly 200g.

surely the gov. should be concerned with diesels emitting more nitrogen dixode etc why just co2!

anyway a 6.0 litre lambo is nearly 500 g co2/km and thats in the same class as the 335i... thats a con!

cars below 100 g co2/km are free, but theres one small problem - they arent any about..apart from electric cars which you have to plug into the wall, and of course that comes from fossil fuels --> more co2.

Just fancied a rant

Cheers

Yup, £300 this year and a promise of £400 next year.

Better get the 335d then

How much would it be for 335d ?
I'm facing 335d vs 335i decision.

Don't like sound of diesels compared to petrol, but also wondering if 335d can actually be tuned up to be quicker than 335 anyway.

Wish I'd gone ahead and bought an X5 4.8is now a few months ago - THEY are what should be penalised, not a relatively normal car!

Would chipping the car 335i Manual make less c02?

I keep hearing about better mpg in chipped cars so surely chipping the car could slot it under the c02 band...?

How could this be proved though as its not standard?

Nice try but don't for one minute think you'd get away with that!!!

hmmm a phone call to the DVLA may be in order i think...

Question...
If i was to carry out a modification to my car in order to fall in the lower c02 would i pay less tax?

They have to offer incentives surely....?

Two thoughts.

1) If you can afford a 335i then an extra £240 to pay towards road tax isn't going to dent your pocket. It's costing more than that per month in depreciation. This might be more of an issue for someone buying an older, cheaper car though. Depreciation may increase as well because of this.

real world, std diesel faster anyway blah blah etc. That aside, I would think the 335i, being twin turbo, could also be tuned a healthy amount.

So the 335d at 200g/km is in Band F, so it looks like some of us got away with only a £10 rise in VED.

It is a bit of a bummer isn't it, but I've seen it comming for a while so am not totally surprised. Fortunately for us our 335d is in band F, so only a tenner rise which we can live with.

Regards

Chris

But surely it is a question of value and personal choice. By the same logic you can charge a ferrari owner 240 quid for a pair of levis because they're already loaded. Everything you spend money on has to meet your own criteria for value, and chucking an extra 240 quid a year to the government for potentially little gain doesn't seem like great value to me and is a factor when considering differences between these two not dissimilar cars.

i hate unforseen outgoings, over the last few weeks my integra got broken into (£300) my wifes renault megane needed a new steering lock solonoid (£300) BOTH mine and my wifes insurance bills came through (£1500 - normally they aren't together cuz she is on a 10 month i'm on 12) - thats £2100 on top of the 3 months in advance (>£2000) i had to pay for the start of the e92 lease...

jeez now i've written it all down like that i must just have to have a little cry

I agree, it's not value for money and I was generalising Someone spending 60k on a Range Rover isn't going to be put off by this, though they may still look at diesel vs petrol for other reasons. And in that example, the diesel may well be in the same VED band anyway.

You're right, it will come into account when comparing a d vs an i, both around the same purchase price. FWIW, today, my answer is, "I'd get the d" .

e.g. you may decide to resign yourself to the £240 extra per year if you really want the petrol straight 6 noise. And of course, the diesel would save you on fuel as well so this is just one other part of the running costs to consider. It's unfortunately just become a more significant one.

Its not the money thats the problem its knowing that the £400 is not gong to be used on transport/roads etc etc!!!

That REALLY pis$$s me off!!

well that means it might have to be a 996 Turbo rather than a 997...but made before 1st march 2001..

as its then all based on engine size; big as or smaller than 1549cc

JonMad> what did you mean by "real world, std diesel faster anyway blah blah etc"

The only thing that bugs me with diesel is the noise when it first starts up. There seem to be a lot more around than 335i, the diesel is becoming more tempting now.

I think JonMad means the 335d is going to feel faster on the road than the 335i in the UK and I tend to agree.

My 530d was probably faster in a practical sense than my 330i. The fact it that the diesels always have the torque to accelerate rapidly in any situation, wheras in a petrol engined car to get the same oomph you have to work a bit harder. If you have the space and the inclination petrol is faster, but you can't often do that on the road.

As a case in point the 2 320d's at UK3 had no problem at all mixing it with the 330i's.

As to Gordon - he's a w*nker, but it's not all his fault. The government signed up to Kyoto and that means they have to reduce CO2 emissions. I'm in favour of this and I'm just going to have to roll with the punches.

More alarming is the stealth law being considered by the EU which would require all manufacturers to achieve an average CO2 emission of 130 g/km accross their product range. That would kill ferrari and seriously wound BMW / Merc and Audi.

Our only hope is bioethanol - which would be carbon neutral and provide more power:

http://www.green-car-guide.com/news/...st-biofuel.htm

Let's hope the top gear crew manage to grow their own.
