Is it just me, or is everyone else seeing a lot of "car burn marks" on the highways lately?
Went to my mom's for easter, and in a 3 hour drive, I bet I saw 5 locations where someones ride had burnt. |

OP, please keep us updated on the cause. Seeing how as I drive the same car I am very curious to know if this is a diesel thing or just some freaky accident. |

My personal opinion is the BMW should replace your car under warranty. This fire most likely was caused by a malfunction of the vehicle itself.
In any case, your insurer will probably go after BMW for payment. |

OP glad you are OK. That sucks. How long did it take them to put it out?
Come to think of it, I just turkey baster-changed my PS fluid and leaked a bit next to the reservoir. I wiped it up. How do I make sure I cleaned that sufficiently so I don't BBQ my engine??? |

On another note, thank you for all the support so far guys. I will keep everyone updated as soon as I get any news on what the possible cause was. Will also be speaking to the issuing dealer this afternoon to see what they have to say! |

if you wiped it up, you're fine, it would have to be a little more significant to "fire". Like a teaspoon. If you wiped it up, any left overs would evaporate before ignition.
His fire was likely from a full on power steering leak (possibly from over filling). There can be up to a quart to light. |

If BMW would like to go and see the vehicle let me know and I will authorise Copart to let them in to their compound to see it. Our engineer will not necessarily be able to say why the fire occurred, the main objective of the report we make will be to value the vehicle and give it a total loss category if it is a confirmed write off, therefore it would probably be best if BMW went to see the vehicle themselves in my opinion. |

qtasad, that's horrible to have happen to you! Glad you're okay...the car will get sorted out.
I've only had a small fire once years ago on one of my cars, but ever since I started driving, each and every one of my cars has always had a fire extinguisher (and a first aid kit) on board...usually a 5ABC. I've seen cars with a small fire under the hood that ended up writing off the car as the fire built. Fire is nasty stuff, IMO, and I'll do everything I can to guard against it, or put it out...if at least to buy some time to make sure everyone is safe. Regards D.

OP when you saw the fire did you try to close the hood right away?
Opening the hood probably allowed more oxygen to fuel the fire .... it reminded of what happened to one of my tuna fishing ship ... there was a electrical wiring that that caused a fire in the engine room... the captain opened the engine room hatch when he should of closed that thing shut so no oxygen goes in.

Did your car have any mods? Two aspects here, mods can cause fires and mods might cause your insurance company to turn down your claim. I'm interested too as I've got Lux Angel Eyes on my 330d and I've heard that Angel Eye mods have been responsible for a number of engine bay fires.
