I thought he was going to wreck the rear of that ATS into the metal rail!

bullshit in my opinion

Ok, raise your hand if you've driven an ATS. Any ATS. Didn't think so.

I gotta give the ATS some credit. It will make a nice rental car.

I just rented a 2012 328i (F30) and it was also a nice rental (Avis)...
Anyway, I hav read quite a few reviews where ATS kills F30 in the performance/handling area, where BMW 3er ruled for decades...

I tried to rent an ATS from Hertz. They didn't have any - rented a Mercedes C250 instead.

I don't know why BMW is abandoning its roots! It became a multi-billion dollar corporation with its sporty automobiles. It seems like now you have to buy an M car to get the dynamics of previous lower models. Car and Driver said the E90 is superior to the ATS in every way...so I'm content. I pick the E9X over the F3X as of now. The ATS and F30 both have kinks that will hopefully be worked out in an LCI.

It's good that BMW has tougher competition. (I don't think Infiniti and Lexus will just sit back either) It'll be like a reality check for them. They better make a fix if they wanna keep the 3 series as "the 3 series."

It sppears that Cadillac has come up with a car that is a legitimate competitor in the segment.

I read in a Car and Driver article that the Cadillac engineers deliberately set their sights for dimensions/handling/feel on the e46 3-series. Looks like they succeeded. The thing is even nearly identical in every outside dimension....

Their auto tranny is their Achilles heel. Have a much better unit, and who knows, the tables might be turned. Or at least it'd be even closer.

I saw the same thing. Interestingly enough, supposedly MotorTrend did a review of just the BMW vs. the Cadillac (no Mercedes) and the BMW won... quite odd.

These comparisons will always be somewhat subjective but there have been a number of ATS vs. F30 reviews and for the most part the reviewers felt that the cars were very close in most respects while the BMW excelled in some areas and the Cadillac in others. What is interesting is that few if any reviewers said that the BMW was more fun to drive.

I think it has to do with what's important to you (the car magazine reviewer).
That slants your view of which is better. Both cars apparently approach the "sports sedan" concept slightly differently. The BMW--more power, bigger, bit roomier, a bit better cruiser. The Caddy--essentially an e46 with a craptastic automatic transmission and a somewhat underwhelming engine.

The ATS is only a good thing for us 3-lovers, as BMW will up its game to stay dominant. Looking forward to seeing the ATS-V come out.

I'm a fan of excellent cars...no matter who builds them.

Or BMW will just continue down the Audi route.

i just read the article and all the comments, i think just the fact that they said the caddy steered and handled better made me put it on my test drive list. hopefully the ats-v will be available when my lease is up, i cant/wont drive an auto. i just dont like the direction bmw is going in, or any other auto maker for that matter, im not a fan of electric steering, i dont like the electric throttle my e90 has.

Biggest surprise for me: trunk volume of the F30 is 17 cubic ft. The Caddy only has 10. So the Cadillac handles better while the MW is cushier and has a bigger trunk. How's that for crazy? I'm going to put on some white sneakers and head down to the local Denny's for the early bird special, who's with me?
