I'm getting a serious itch to buy new wheels....I really shouldn't....but the itch is back and its killing me....18s or 19s for a 335i E90? Opinions, thoughts?

I'll probably need new tires too...but I can't decide....

Oh.... I don't know. For an E92, maybe 19". But for an E90 (sedan I am assuming), I think 18" is a better look. IMO

I wouldn't roll on 19's in Toronto with the sorry state of our roads. It's an adventure getting home from work every day on my 18 inch wheels.

I am also thinking about getting 19" rims with summer tires, but considering the condition of Toronto's roads, I think I will stick with 18"s.

I think it depends on the wheel style and color too. I've seen some 19" wheels that look bad on certain cars.

I'll go for 18" without drop and 19" with drop.

19s will make the ride rougher and drop would make it worse. I have 19" BBS black with rfts and ride is a little harsh. Its all a matter of what you are used to. 18" non rft winters. Not a huge difference. Going non RFT in spring.

You eventually will so save yourself some hassle and go directly with 19"

As for the comparison on my winter setup 18" and 19" summer, I actually have bent a rim on my 18" while I only manage a blown tire on my 19" from 3 yrs of Toronto pothole fest.

As for ride comfort, I don't think they make too much of a differences as long as you have a good set of suspension and please loose those RFTs.

Are you going for performance or “looks”?

In the May 2010 issue of Car and Driver there was an interesting article entitled, "Plus-Size Models - Testing the Performance Effects of Up sizing Wheels and Tires." But the 17 and 18-inch setups offer a better compromise of grip, acceleration, price, and ride harshness...If it's acceleration you're after, stick with the smaller, lighter wheels and tires.”

I don't agree with C&D's assertion that the 19" wheels "look the coolest" though. My M3 Coupe came with the optional M Double Spoke 19s, and after driving it for a while I mounted the OEM M Double Spoke 18s instead. I think the performance and looks are much better than the 19s. IMO, anything bigger than 18" wheels on a BMW 3-Series looks gaudy.

18" wheels will ride better, handle better, accelerate better, and brake better than heavier 19” wheels. The truth is that heavier wheels = increased unsprung weight at the corners = reduced acceleration and degraded braking. 18" tires are more widely available and less expensive than 19" tires, which is an added bonus when you need to shop for new tires.

Okay, so I have the ugly 16" standard wheels, and want to upgrade as soon as the tires need replacing. Either 17 or 18. So, throwing out the aesthetic factor, does this citing mean my 16" are the best for acceleration (lighter, smaller)?

I once saw an interview with an F1 team engineer who was asked what size wheels the team would run if it wasn’t for the 330mm (13 inch) limit. He said the team would probably run 430mm (17 inch) wheels, but no larger than 460mm (18 inch). I can't remember the source though.

whooaaa cant believe ppl suggesting 18s. Ohh well, i guess roads where u live do suck bad.

Im glad i got 19s. Look wise - id be torturing myself if i bought 18s and came to one of the meets.

19's for basic street driving, depending on the tire, you'll see little difference in ride harshness. IMO 19's look better.

18's if you plan on taking your car to the track allot. Tires are cheaper and you have allot more options as it is a more popular size.

Personally I have factory 162's for winter driving, and some nice aluflugen 19's for summer.
