I realise that I could be stepping back a couple of years here, but the stark fact is that the 640d is no family wagon for three dogs! I also want to be saving money by changing and the car will be mine with no worries about kerbing wheels or keeping it pristine for the return inspection.

I have made an offer on the 2008 35d/30sd so will wait for the response!

Good luck. Keep us updated. Think it's about time I started shopping for a car again - it's been a while

So not to put a downer on the offer you've made peterg1965 however my dad has a 58 plate X5 which replaced a V8 RR. To begin with all was fine and I much prefer the look of the X5 however after a few years of use (albeit lugging kids and dogs around) - it creaks horribly, the rear sensors don't work (not a massive issue given the reversing camera) and the left heated seat doesn't warm up properly. I absolutely accept it could be a dodge one but I'd seriously recommend you test the car for half a day etc. before making a decision.

Other than the issues mentioned above though, it's a really nice car - comfortable, quick off the line, has good road presence and, from what I've seen first hand, as capable in the snow as the RR. Also looks mean given the mahoosive rear tyres.

23k-ish. Now on 45k-ish.

Problems started around 35k.

My X5 is also 2008, haven't had too many issues, no creaks or rattles for sure.

Recently I had to replace a front caliper which at 40k seemed a bit early, I do liberally use Bilberry wheel cleaner when washing and it could be contributed to that. Only other issue was a failure in the motor to level one of the headlights, cost about £200 to fix of which BMW immediately offered to pay £100 as a goodwill measure.

There are loads of motors and technology so worth testing everything but if buying AUC you will get the warranty anyway so nothing to be concerned about in the immediate term.

I was considering getting something similar for the wife.

Now I might get flamed for this but I think I have found the VW Touareg to be a much nicer and vastly better value. Especially with the 5.0l V10TDI.

Oh dear I said it out loud...

Sorry about repeat post!!! Just getting used to Galaxy S4 on the move!!

My offer on the 2008 X5 fell on stony ground, not interested other than giving me 'free' 12 months road tax. Apparantly lots of UK wide interest (of course) and no hope of car being available next week...... That's fine I am not willing to be beaten into submission as there are a few cars out there...

I wanted £1000 of the car and HP finance at 8% APR, not unreasonable but what do I know.

Pete,

I know the conditions of you handing back the 640d are to take out a new agreement, is there anything in there about how long you have to have the new one for? Just thinking you could take out the finance and then get a personal loan at a much cheaper rate and pay it off??

Just a word of warning, I went from an newish car to an old one and it drove me mad so much so I sold it and went for a cheaper newer car. I know these older 4x4's look great in terms of value but remember you are use to the latest tech and going back to the old tech is hard!!

Thanks Scott.
I know what you mean about stepping back in technology terms. As the car is mainly for my wife I suspect we could probably cope. I know that the satnav in the 2008 car is not too clever but again, we wont use it very often.

dealership came back to me this morning with an 8.6% APR finance package, so slow progress is being made!

At least they are moving a bit. Are they offering any discount on the car, I would have thought your target of 1k was not really too unrealistic.

Both the cars I listed in this thread are now sold.....neither to me I might add. Not to worry, plenty more out there and I am not in a mad rush.

As a long shot, I have asked BMW Park Lane if they have any brand new run out model X5s with HUGE discounts (the normal military discount is 15%) that could entice me into a new one.

Am off to the local dealer to drive their X5 and X3 demo's this weekend.

If you are going for a new £10k off is achievable, I got that off the X6 and if you look at palmnuts deal it should be easy :-)

Oh, I'd be interested to chop in the QQ for a new X5, if they're giving them away . There aren't any cheap lease deals on them whatsoever so I'm guess there aren't any 'giveaway' offers around. Interested to hear what they offer you...

How's your QQ doing for depreciation then Rog? Suspect it must hold its value quite well.

Used X5 with decent miles seem to move pretty quickly as there aren't a load for sale. As recession hit less were being sold new therefore less used ones now.

I have seen pre reg well specced 30d M Sport for 45k upwards, that's probably about 12k off.

Not sure actually, not really looked, nudging 18 months old now (from new) so the time when you usually get royally kicked in the nads. There's only 4 1.6d Tekna 4x2's on Nissan's AUC right now. Closest one is a red one (unpopular colour), 6 months younger, similar mileage (10k), on at £19k. They are £26.5k new, I got it for less, but can't lay my hands on the exact amount now - would obviously need to check the settlement (paid about £7.5k in finance payments). Guess it's close-ish to breakeven. Perhaps.

No new previous model X5s left at BMW Park Lane, I got a sneaky quote on the new model X5, but it is £200/month above budget!

8.4% Flat!!! That's payday loan interest territory (nearly) surely no one would buy at 17% APR from a Main dealer.....
