I dunno if I'd say there is a lot of conflicting experiences. I've used LM 25s, M3 wintersports, and W300s. They are all "performance" winters. Of the 3 I preferred the W300s. I mostly drive in the city, though - I realize W300's won't cut it for people who are on less urban roads. I have not tried W409s, but in speaking with the guys over at tires23 they seem pretty highly regarded.

Better in the snow I was dealing with, which is usually less than 2-3 inches. I was able to get moving from a start better and stop better. I don't know if I'd trust them in heavy snow, but the same can be said of any performance winter. My car is lowered anyway, so if there is more than ~5 inches I'm kind of doomed.

I ran Dunlop Winter Sport 3D's (245/40R18's) on my Evo X during the winter and those tires were quite solid in the snow. I've also tried out the Michelin X-Ice set (205/55R16) on my Dad's IS250 AWD and those were equally worthy. The Michelin's seemed a bit smoother and provided a quieter ride, but both sets provided lots of grip in accelerating from a stop and in turns.

XIce and LM 60 are VERY different tires
The LM 60 is the newest performance snow tire. I understand that it is replacing the LM 25.
Tire tech changes so fast that often the newest tire from one of the major manufacturer is the best. That is why I am buying a new set of LM 60s for my 335i this winter. If LM25 was one of the better ones, the newer version should be that much better. XIce is a GREAT snow tire. I put them on my wife's Accord. But most forum readers (read: performance drivers) would HATE the Xice when they reach the first dry corner. They are REAL snow tires and just don't corner as well as any "performance snow" tire. BTW - I have 2 almost new Michellin Pilot Alpins for sale for $200 ($100 each). |

I've run Yokohama IG10s for the last 4 seasons (on a FWD car) and they are amazing. This year I'll be buying IG20s for sure and sticking to stock tire sizes.

They are clearing out LM25s at Tirerack, not sure if they are all gone...
The LM25s are cheaper than the Dunlop Wintersport 3D right now from tirerack.

The W409 is a wonderful SNOW tire. I used it last winter, going to cottage/ski country a lot. It's very comparable to the Gislaved Nordfrost 5, another very good snow tire. If you venture out of Toronto in the winter, you need a SNOW tire, not a performance winter tire. People talk highly of Pilot Alpins and Dunlop Sports. That's good for Toronto driving, not the snow belt.

Ok so I'm going to pull the trigger on the X-Ice Xi2's and I'll be ordering them from TireRack this week.
It's a bit off topic but for those of you in Vancouver, has anyone ever picked up tires in Point Roberts or Blaine before? I know about TSB in Point Roberts but I've had many people telling me the border guards there are a pain on the way back to Canada. I was thinking of looking for a place in Blaine instead and I'm not worried about lineups since I have a Nexus. I've been referred to Hagen's (http://www.hagensofblaine.com/Site/Home.html). Has anyone used these guys for shipping before for tires?
