no oil cooler n54 temps vs with oil cooler
I average around 230-240 degrees when driving more then 20-30 minutes sometimes itll never go past 210-220 if its cold out or somewhat short drive.
When going up the canyons driving pretty hard ill reach 260-270 degrees, if I get a retrofitted oil cooler would these temps drop substantially? Also was wondering if an intercooler upgrade would be better to get first then a retrofit oil cooler kit, in other words im just looking for what would reduce oil temps the most as i believe the high temps of this engine causes certain parts to fail sooner. (friends n55 temps never really go past 245 even with hard driving) |

didnt see it stated, but i take it, you do not have an oil cooler...with stock cooler on a hot day driving the car hard I have never seen over 255

Consider that, with an oil cooler, the thermostat tries to keep the oil between 240-250 degrees. If you bypass the thermostat, the oil temps take too long to rise and that is even worse.

This was a known problem when the 335i was initially launched. N54 runs real hot & even with the factory oil cooler, some people get their temps up real high (people who live in "hot" states & people who put their cars on a track/drag strip). I'm in NJ & usually average 240-250, which is fine for right now but even I'm a little concerned about aggressive driving in the middle of July. An oil cooler isn't a priority, but I'm planning on eventually going with this one (after I decide what body kit I wanna go with)

I have a Strett on order after seeing my buddies temps I listed above....getting on it I would see 260-270 with the exact car as yours.

No problem, I ordered it directly from Stett....best mod I have ever done. I modified my inner fender also (may post a vid of this). Make sure you have the vented fender.

I have the OEM oil cooler already, but I'm looking to upgrade since my temps are already around 250 on just a tune and intake (so I'm concerned when I bolt on everything sitting in my basement). W/ the Stage 2, where are you normal/daily driving temps at?

Well 270 is limp mode if I recall.
Normal Oil cooled cars on this platform are 245 (give or take 10 fully warmed up). Thermostat is partially open at some point and fully open near ~238 approx. Non oil cooled cars can exceed 260 fairly easily depending on conditions and how far they are pushed. Some non oil cooled cars can get BMW to warranty a conversion if they hit limp mode enough (depends on dealer). ** Evolution racewerks has a conversion kit for non oil cooled cars and an upgrade option along with it. (on my site). I would definitely recommend it for any non oil cooled cars. |

Sounds like we just need one more piece of info: What is the OPTIMAL oil temp for the N54?

My 2010 E90 M 335i never goes above 255 even when railing my car. Drag race after drag race or up a canyon. My 07' 335i w/o an oil cooler would hit 260+. So having an oil cooler def helps.

When driving around town I'd say around 240. When railing, should be around 255 with an oil cooler.

Aggressive street driving/racing the highest I have seen is 220....I also run with my cowl off snd tht also helps. My fender also has a lot more than stock ventilation .....doubt that matters to much!

A OEM oil cooler, Stett stage 2 or 1 would be much cooler.
