I went into Sytner BMW to pick up tweeter mouldings for my car (wont name which one but for those who know Toys r Us just off J2 M5 will know which one hehe)

While i was there I thought I show the parts guy some pictures I took of my sump which I think the gasket is leaking. He looked at the pics and agreed most likely it was the gasket and priced me up a sump gasket @circa £20. I asked him how much roughly to fit and he said around (in his opinion but would have to ask SA for proper quote) £150 which I thought not to bad. I then mentioned I had BMW extended warranty and aksed if this would be covered by warranty. He asked the SA who did not really give a definitve answer, so then I asked him how much BMW would charge and wait for it......








£430(does not include the oil and filter which would be on top) just to change the gasket. the parts guy looked at me and I looked at him back as we were both were thinking f*** me and which I bursted out laughing. What really made me was the look on the SA face when he quoted that price in thinking that was a competative price

So anyway is this something a local garage could or requires special knowledge/tools? Am I right in thinking drain oil, inbolt sump, remove old gasket, clean, fit new gasket, fill up with oil ?

You reminded me of the situation, when I took my car and asked how much would they charge to drain and refill coolant.

First question was, 'is there any problem' and I said 'No, I am getting it done for my satisfaction'.

Now he started thinking of hours and coolant price and I was told, it would cost about £400-450.


I asked him, why is that. The response was, they would have to let the car cool down, drain it, refil it, bleed it and return it and hence £400-450.

I ended up buying coolant only and got it done at my local indy.

I am sure you will get it done by them as it is very fair price (NOT).

I just had rear trailing arm bushes and a full KDS ( from main dealer) for less than £400 and cheaper than my local specialist,

I think I will be ringing my local garage on monday morning to see what they would charge.

Do you know what is required for the sump drop/removal?
Perhaps its no so easy as you imagine.
How long would it take YOU to do it?

I am not to sure tbh, I have replaced sump gaskets in the past on other cars which have taken me around 2 hours because I didnt have access to ramps and just using trolley jacks/axle stands

From a quick look underneath I cant see anything in the way of the sump removal so I presume its straight foward but then again I could be wrong. But Im guessing if I was to do it would probably take me 3/4 hours as I have never worked on this car before.

However I would presume for a BMW techy who is experienced should take a lot less time. Take for e.g BMW rates at 1 hour - £110.
£430 - £20 (for part) = £410
The amount left over equates to just under 4 hours labour. If I guess it would take me around 4 hours to do I would expect a mechanic to do it less, if not half that time? i dont know??

Although the parts guy did say under his breath that he has seen this sump leak few times before and should not cost more than £150

Oil leaks are covered under BMW extended warrenty as long as the gasket isn't a serviceable item.

This sounds like it should be covered?

I've had my sump replaced as my cars on 140k now and had it done at my indy who charged around £120-130 for labour.
The gasket leaks because the plastic sump gets warped through heat cycles and i would just have the complete sump replaced for a peace of mind.
The sump was approx £180 new complete with gasket and just need oil which i think cost me around £60.
Cost me approx £380 all in at my indy for new sump/gasket/oil and labour and only takes took them around 2-3 hrs to do.
