Is this Normal - Help?

I have a 2008 328i coupe and in the last 6 weeks i have had a laundry list of things go wrong or replaced. I haven't had my car on the road for more than a week total in those 6 weeks. The car has 58K on it and just fell out of warranty a few months ago, go figure .

Lists of things replaced/gone wrong:

- Valve gasket
- AC compressor/Drier
- All pulleys and belts (more preventative when the AC compressor died)
- Coils/Spark plugs
- Brakes/Rotors/Sensors (normal maintenance which i understand)

Total $$$ spent has been right around 5k . Is this normal, should i expect this every 4-6 years? Please don't jinx me right now, i do have the original water pump and thermostat

I'm not seeing how that adds up to $5K. There's a serious chunk of change (at least IMO) that's missing there. Did you have everything done at the dealer?

Of those items VCG is the only one that needs to be "routinely" replaced. And by that I mean every 50K or so.

No, not being done by the dealer, its being done by an independent shop.

the last 3 job totals:

VCG/Control Arms/Brakes/Rotors/Pads/Sensors - $2400
AC compress/drier/idler pulley/belt tensioner system/belt - $1700
Coils/sparks/crankshaft pulley - ~$900 (Could buy coils/sparks from ECS and do it myself, car is in for the crankshaft pulley and a misfire)

Why did you replace the crankshaft pulley, it is not a wear item and should last pretty much forever.

You got charged dealership prices on the other items, you should find another indep that deosn't take the BMW tax for himself.

Thanks for the input. I had to replace the crankshaft pulley b/c it was not spinning properly anymore. It almost looked like it was "warped" or had a little play. It would essentially almost wobble back and forth and i just wanted to replace all pulleys at once.

Coils and plugs are not normal for N52 at 60k. You also spent a lot on 'preventive' stuff. You might want to find another shop that doesn't try to upsell the 'preventive' maintenance.

That being said, my AC compressor also died recently and I've seen increasing number of posts with the same. IMO, that's unacceptable for a car this new. And the AC compressor for these cars are incredibly expensive.

After OP got all those out of the way, you can now start putting money away for the more common OFHG and water pump...

Wow not normal for sure. I have had my car about 8 yrs and have only spent about 1k. Most of this has been tires if all.

Rotors/pads/sensors/install I wouldnt pay more than $900-1000 if I didn't do it myself.

You can get M3 control arms for around $300 and install is literally 4 bolts per side, maybe 2 hours labor.

Coils/spark plugs is one of the easier and cheaper installs, maybe $300 total parts and labor.

I'd suggest findind another indy shop. I can see paying maybe $2500-3000 for all that but not $5k
