I was doing the job and was reading on DIY steps. It says to put 6 liters(quarts in US). Why he the teenager used "6 liters" even though I think he's in the US? I don't know. I later found better DIY sites. Don't follow this DIY. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=538296 The reason why I thought I didn't do it right is this. No matter what I tried, could not put no more than 5. I spilled over 1/2 quart on the floor...messy job. Where the DIY says 6 quarts. I didn't measured the old oil came out. When I did it 2 years ago, there wasn't that many DIY. Now I see much more. I also bought cheap "infrared temp gun" which is handy for many other purposes too. Car still drives good on about 35k miles later. And now with tune which is pumping out close to 400hp. So exact amount is not easy to find. So the best way is to drain, measure it, than put that much amount of new oil back. You can't fill in all the oil on first fill in. You first fill in ~4 quarts(or as much as it goes in). Then start the engine, go thru gears PRND several seconds several times. Then go under and try to fill more. Some says 4.5-5 quarts. I might have some oil leaking 'cause I see some oil residue on the side of the pan. I bought some more Castrol Import oils for future flush. I will drain and reuse the same pan this time. |

I wanted to keep them ready for soon I'll do it again. So I looked at the bottle and it still shows BMW LT71141. So I must've bought it before they changed it. Same exact label info as I have left over bottle from 2 years ago. But yeah, I looked at the PDF and it's no longer there. I love this oil though. For less oil put in there than discovered later, and some leaking out, it's been no problem with 35k miles on it. With a tune now. Knock on wood!!! |

Shell M-1375.4. I'm about to run out and check out all the shelves. If Walmart has it cool. If not Autozone and other parts stores. We're talking major here Google Lifeguard6 = Mercon SP. |

I just purchased a used 335i and it's at 130k. Is it wise to replace the oil? Or should I reuse the oil? |

Because when you ask me whether to reuse old oil, you are asking the wrong question. You should be asking to reuse the pan/filter. So unless you have no idea if pan/oil/sleeve has been replaced by prior owner, I'd do the whole thing. And it's not for the inexperienced and it's a hard work. If you do it wrong, oil can leak(esp Mechtronic sleeve) and you'll be parting out your car. Take it to the shop! |

so if you could point me in the direction of a better one, that would be awesome. I have done a transmission oil pan before with no issues. The problem here is that I'm hearing conflicting things regarding the "lifetime transmission" Dealer told me that when they replace the transmission oil pan to fix a leak, they reuse the oil. I've also heard that once a transmission gets past a certain point, that a fluid change would do more harm then good, due to the wear and tear build up on the gears, if that makes any sense. Now I'm curious and debating if I should replace the oil and if so, which is best? In either case, I would replace the pan/filter anyway and the mechatronics o rings. |

But the consensus is 4.5-5qts is the norm. It's just that you fill in the first time is like ~4qts. Than start the engine and let it warm up like 5-8min. Pump in some till it starts to overflow. As for the "lifetime" oil? You need to research more. But I can guarantee that "lifetime" is when it dies. BMW tech only knows what BMW tells them. Our ZF tranny is also equipped on other cars like Rover, Jaguar, Lincoln Navigator to name a few. And they all have required oil change intervals. So BMW lifetime? You got in here asking questions. So you can also google about the lifetime tranny oil and see what you find. Basically, look around and learn about your car and info. Do some homework... |

Right around 5qts. Done and no problem so far after 35k miles later. But B&A should be good. |

I had this job done just last week. Just under 6 quarts came out. My car only has 41k miles but it has seen quite a few track days. Even the. The fluid came out pretty clear and the pan itself looks pretty clean with just some clutch materials on the magnetic. I would say I probably changed a little early. Oh well. Refilled according to ZF procedure using redline D4, and it took just around 6 quarts as well. So far so good!

This thread prompted me to get mine done. 110,000kms on the clock never had a tranny change before.
Quoted 1500 at a prestige mechanic, my indie mechanic doing it for 400 |

Sorry for bumping an old thread but looking for some help. Just bought the pan c/w filter ($100 from Rock Auto ) as well as the sleeve but now looking for a DIY specific to the 335 (well a 2008 335xi to be very specific haha). This DIY (http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...mission&page=3) seems to be tailored to the 325's.
Also I'm reasonably sure that my car has the GA6HP-19Z tranny which means I need LifeGuard6 = Shell M1375 = Mercon SP fluid?

I've been using Castrol Multi-Vehicle ATF(wallyworld) which is LT71141 compatible. (I bought them few years ago to stock it).
Now it is no longer compatible with LT71141 so don't buy it. I changed it about 50k miles interval. With top-off at about 20k miles in between(I now know the behavior; on freeway speeds and hit the pedal, with low fluid it would be strong and shocking shift. With full level, it'd shift smoothly i.e. gradual shift). I topped it off with Carquest Peak/Carquest Multi-Vehicle ATF part# CQ470. Old fluid came out dark red vs new fluid being translucent light red you can see thru it. I didn't change the pan filter/sleeve this time since it only has 50k miles ago. Maybe next time(PITA job). Also wallyworld sells Valvoline Multi-Import ATF that lists LT71141 compatible at $4.~~. I might do that. Carquest/Oreilly has Motorcraft Mercon SP for 7.~~, or Peak Multi-Vehich ATF for 6. Now I'm not certain about the Motorcraft compatibility with LT71141. The main thing is whichever ATF you use, look for LT71141 in the label. And change it at 40-50k miles interval with occasional checking and top it off. There are still old ATF inside the torque-converter so you'll mix it with new. No problems with ATF I bought from wallyworld with 55k miles. Quote:
