335i Insurance
Just wondering if anyone can help me.
I'm buying my first car (e92 335i) at the age of 23 and was wondering what to do about my insurance. I've checked the comparison website and the best quote i've gotten is £1800 but the compulsory excess is £3000!!!! The other quotes with a reasonable excess is around £8000 which is just stupid. I'm thinking of taking the £3000 excess insurance but I'm not too sure how its gonna work out for me. What if I get into an accident with another car or two, and its my fault, can I pay for the damages without going through my insurance? What if I get into an accident and its not my fault, what happens? Also, do you guys know any insurance companies that would give me a reasonable quote? What are you currently paying for your 335i/d? Thanks for the help |

If your asking these questions, then you can not afford a 335i at your current age. Also, your insurance not only covers other motorists, but street furniture that you could hit, people etc etc.....

How many years ncb and how long you been driving for?
Personally i would wait unless you can afford to pay that much on insurance? Taken into account running costs as well? 3k excess is huge imo |

LOL
You pay excess if you make any claim that was your fault. If Someone hits you , you call their insurance and claim through them ,not sure how it work but you need to tell your insurnace but if claims are dealt through your own insurance excess needs to be paid but can claim it back from the people who hit you? someone with more knowlegde will come along soon.

Yeah I understand that, but if I do damage worth £3000, then I don't mind paying the £3000 excess.
I want to know if I do damage thats worth £1000, can't I just pay the £1000 directly without going through insurance? I don't see the point in getting insured on a crappy 1.6 or similar and still pay around £2800 for insurance. |

I do not think that its worth of having insurance with £3K excess.
Try to add a responsible 2nd driver and see if that make any difference.

Man, if you have the money go for it!!!... life is short!
Regarding insurance, everyone gets fcuked!!!! ....No matter if you're old or young... well, if you're young and have very little no claims history then you get fcuked more.... but no matter what....car insurance in this country fcuks everyone without lube! ... regarding excess, i believe that if you're at fault, then you will have to pay your insurance company for any excess applicable... if you're not....then you have to chase the other party's insurance company directly and you don't pay any excess.... |

Have you tried getting a quote on something a little less?
Maybe a 330i ? 325i ? and if still too high why not a 320d/320i? After a couple of years with NCB, you will be over 25 too and that 335i will seem all the faster. |

I get the same quotes with a e46 318i so I really don't see the point getting that. Might as well get a 335i

Where are you getting these quotes from with £3000 excess? Surely you can't be using a comparison site.
I'm 22 now and I got my 335 at 21, 4 years NCB, 3 points and a F rated postcode and I pay £1050. My excess is well under £1000.

I would never claim for a bump less than 1K costs as you just get shafted for 5 years afterwards when you do, it will cost you more than 1K over the 5 years in increased premiums. At a young age, the consequences of a minor claim in subsequent years of increased premiums would probably be more than £3000. So it makes sense to go for high excess and fund smaller incidents yourself if they occur. Save the insurance claims for if you are unlucky enough to have a BIG accident where you really need it. Low excess plays on peoples fears and enables insurers to screw you for more dosh. |

Surely that point of high insurance costs for new drivers is because insurance companies don't want new drivers getting into powerful cars. I managed to crash a 60bhp 1.0 106 when I first started driving....if I had access to a 300bhp car I'm almost certainy it will have ended up in a hedge/wall/tree
Personally I would buy something cheap, and build up some no-claims bonus and than buy a M3 in a few years. |
