Apple Lightning to 30 pin adapter WORKS with previous gen idrive

I am one of the first to get one... And yes I can say it works flawlessly with the older nav.. I have an 03-07 build 335 with 6fl an the older Idrive and it works just like my iPhone 4S used to.. It has worked in my bose sound dock as well including using the remote. Just thought I would share.

I was just going to make a thread on this. So...if you have the new Iphone5/touch/nano that has the new lighting usb, and say you have the bmw Y-Cable, all you would need is to buy the new 30 pin adapter converter apple sells and just plug it in between and everything works the same? no flaws?

No flaws whatsoever... I should have tested it on the x5 with the newer nav but it works flawlessly with the older nav and the y cable in my 03-07 build 335. Since they both use the same y cable I assume they would work the same.

Dang. I use Spotify and the adapter isn't letting me use the controls. Oh well.

But you're right - it does work for the iPod feature at least.

This is great news! I was worried that I won't be able to control the iPhone through the steering wheel with the adapter. I've been using my iPod mini ever since I got my new phone. Now I just have to wait until the apple store near me gets some stock.

Sorry to sidetrack, but I have a quick question:

Does the audio signal using the iPod connector travel through the iPod pins/connector or through the headphone jack? I'm just trying to figure out if the hard-drive and/or USB key are a better option for fidelity.

Thanks

On an iOS device, it goes from the 30 pin connector's analog out to the headphone jack. If you use a USB device, then the digital signal is sent to a DAC in the MULF unit. They appear to be about the same quality IMO.

Through the pins; they're using the line-out capability of the dock connector so you're using the ipod's DAC rather than a DAC in the head unit. Thus the Y cable with a dock connection on one end and an AUX plug plus USB connector on the other. Amazon has a 3rd party cable for $22 that I've been using.

Note: in my experience trying a USB key, it was a pain for more than a couple gigs of music. When tried several GB of stuff the car wouldn't get done indexing the music before I got to where I was going most times and tended to pause a lot in playback. I tried a couple different USB flash drives. Doesn't happen with an ipod nano or my iphone 4S with all else the same.

I used 2GB USB keys for that reason. Also, if you pull a key out in the middle of something (say, an audio book) then play another, when you go back to the first it remembers where you were. Very valuable. I just wish it wasn't in such a stupid place. It's deadly trying to change it while driving.

I have the lighting adapter also. Connected to my Y cable but my iPhone 5 won't charge. I get an error message on my phone about not being able to charge. Any one else getting this message?

Finally a thread with a clear compatibility answer!

I'm still trying to justify the 5 over the 4S but that's another thread.
