2016 Porsche 911 Carrera S review- turbocharged

7:30 on Nurburgring

Should I buy one?:

To hell with tradition – yes, buy one. Throughout its illustrious history the 911 has adopted various changes that have made it a better and more exhilarating car to drive; the water-cooled engine of 1998 is just one example of a departure from the original that served to improve its standing.

The purists will be up in arms at the prospect of the 911 receiving a turbocharged engine. But as with all the other changes made down through the year, it is progress, and that’s what we have with the Carrera S.

To say it is simply a better car than its predecessor is perhaps understating things a little. This new model has taken a big step forward. It is now more rounded than ever, more powerful and more economical. Importantly, though, it is still as invigorating as ever to drive. And that is what really counts.

You mean to tell me that the turbocharged, torquier and wider powerband version is better?

I've never heard this before... or perhaps I have

Cool car. And impressive track performance for sure.

I am curious about what kind of power the GTS is going to get when it moves to the turbocharged engine. Is that happening with the 991.2 or not until the next generation?

It seems like a turbocharged GTS will end up with almost as much power as the GT3 since it's only 45hp behind right now. And on the other side, this new S is only 10hp behind the existing GTS, so they need to give it a decent boost to create separation. There's only so much room there to play with.

Well, hell.
I thought I may read some negatives. A bit heavier was it.
I'd like to hear some manual shift reviews and if lag is evident. Probably not.

FI or not, after reading that...want!

That blue. Mmmm.

and with a turbo, a simple software tune will give you 991 GT3 or maybe even *gasp* GT3RS power.

they are also offering front axle lift and the rear wheel steer on the Carreras from the GT3/GT3RS. so the differentiation is now primarily aero and interiors.

The vertical slats are strange after so many years with horizontal.
Yum indeed.

No like.

dual exhaust, vertical grills, weird body work - none of that is working.

And yet Porsche has said they are keeping normally aspirated engines for their GT cars. Hmm...they know NA brings a whole different experience.

Just the way M should have done it. Make the normal cars torquey, efficient and easy to drive and make the actual sports models rev like crazy and be a little trickier.

My M Coupe was so much more fun than our faster 135i, but the 1er was a more enjoyable road trip car in most situations.

Until this car has real electric torque fill, the NA will still be the truer sports car. Anyhow seems like a much better effort at FI than the M guys.

Hahah not that, they did not undertire a car and ship it out like an afterthought while putting their best minds on the i series cars.

Easily fixed by getting in on the 18"x11" wheels group buy

My GUESS is the 275 wide PSS were a compromise move so the car would have good wet weather traction and reasonable tire replacement intervals. The internet would be full of complains about frequent tire replacements for $$$$ if there were 305 wide r comps from the factory

Thank you for pointing this out - most people tend to over look the historical perspectives. Vertical slats are part of Porsche heritage, and I believe they are executed quite well on the 991.2.
