Anyone experienced Wastegattle Rattle again after having it fixed?
Background:
Got my car in March of this year. It's an 07 coupe. Not long after getting it I heard the dreaded wastegate rattle. It was very noticeable and didn't require revving very high to hear it. Quite apparent on throttle letoff. Took it to the dealer and it was there almost 2 weeks. In the end they replaced both turbos and wastegates and updated to latest software version. Now here we are today. Driving today with windows down I thought I heard a slight rattle when letting off throttle at high rpms. When i got home I popped the hood and had someone rev the car for me to listen. If this is wastegate rattle again it isn't as bad as the previous time at least not yet. It requires revving to about 5k+ to really hear it and it isnt real noticeable without having the hood up. Is there any other explanation for what I may be hearing? If it is wastegates has this happened to anyone else? Having wastegate failure multiple times. UPDATE: I had a JB2 installed so I removed it for my scheduled appointment tomorrow. Whenever I removed the JB2, the car began giving reduced engine power service engine soon indications. I double checked all connections with the JB2 removal and everything appears fine. I've installed and removed this thing many times so I'm quite confident in that. Kind of strange I get an error after removing the tune. So now with tune removed and the limp mode going on I can't even check to see about the wastegate rattle. Any reason for removing the JB2 and the accompanying solenoid bypass to cause errors. I'm leaving battery unplugged for a while to see if something may reset. Last edited by FirstBMWLA; 07-05-2010 at 05:40 PM.. Reason: More info |

Well, I think it was "fixed" when I first got it back otherwise I would have noticed it earlier. I'm always listening for odd sounds after the first experience.
Unless by not fixed right you mean by the fact that it's coming back it wasn't fixed right and if it had been fixed "right" it would never come back. |

Take it in and have them adjust the actuator arms. I had mine replaced as well at 35,000 miles and it has returned at 45,000 miles so yea I have had multiple failures. Luckily procede has a user adjustable for that. Its just taking control of the vacuum that moves the waste-gates default position instead of adjusting the arms. I suspect both of these are only band aids for the problem until they actually fail.

I just had both my turbos replaced about 3 weeks ago and when its cold it makes the same noise only when its cold but at really low rpms. It also makes a loud rattle on startup, I don't know if thats normal or not. I also had mine replaced with newer model that supposedly has bigger actuator arms. Mine doesn't make the noise in between shifts anymore so its def. better.
I would bring it back and say something b/c if you had them replaced in 07 then you probably still have the older model, you never know it could be the same thing.

well BMW has gone thru 4 revisions of the turbos so maybe the ones they replaced it with were still bad. i believe a new version of the turbos came out a couple months ago

Just realized my initial post was badly worded. The car is an 07 model but I got the car just a few months ago in March.
The turbos were replaced in April about 3 months ago. Probably have only put a couple thousand miles on it since having both turbos and wastegates replaced. So quite surprised to be having this issue so quickly. |

Normal. Sounds like crap. I gave up on mine and stopped worrying about it. I had it fixed and it always comes back for everyone I know with a 335. Really awesome car, but the rattling and HPFP dont belong in a $50K car let alone a $25K car. BMW couldn't do better? Wait, go to an Acura Turbo, oh its Japanese; So lets try VW. And they do have HPFP too, No rattling and failing without warning in traffic too. BMW should borrow a leaf from VW.

I'm kind of sick I'm going through this crap again. Last time it took them 2 weeks to get me my car back. Hopefully this time it will be a bit quicker.
Has anyone had wastegates actually replaced twice. Wondering if they'll do that or just try adjusting things. |

I'm getting the new turbos as I type this, and just in time. I go out of warranty in October. I'd been putting it off for a while now, but I had a misfire on 3 of the cylinders yesterday, so I pulled out my JB3 and am going to let the dealer go to town on my engine.

I had my car in two weeks ago because of the WG rattle being terrible which BMW claimed led to my underboost codes. They only did the software update, and told me that some WG rattle was "normal." I wanted to play dumb (because of mods) so didn't pursue much at the time. However, after putting my procede back in, the WG rattle is back and still pretty annoying despite the procede user adjustment. I am not getting underboost anymore, but do I just take the car back in and complain of the WG rattle, even though they said this was normal (and I have no codes)?
BTW it is 07' CPO with 46k miles... The car was there for 4 days while they were trying to diagnose the underboost issue, which led me to believe I was getting new turbos

Yes take it back- I mean they should fix it if something is rattling. This is not some crappy car its a expensive car and if it is under warranty I would make them fix it. And no wastegate rattle is not normal or they wouldnt be replacing the actuators and wastegates and now my turbos for it. Also if it was normal it would be doing it from the day you drove off the lot not come randomly after 40k miles.
