dash symbol light
hi all, iv just had some work done and they garage disconnected the battery, now i have a symbol on my dash of a steerling wheel with a padlock.. red background
could the battery disconnect cause this to appear as my car feels and steers fine, started 4/5times already no problems, so is it possibly a code resetclear needed? but fine to drive? Last edited by russ335d; 07-31-2012 at 04:15 PM.. |

funnily enough after my oil and filter service a few weeks ago the red steering wheel lock symbol has also been showing on my dash. Car starts fine and steering locks and unlock fine when fob is inserted / taken out so not sure why the symbol is showing.
Anyone else have experience of this? |

Unfortunately it's a well known fault which is with the electronic steering column lock. It can manifest itself as either a yellow fault and padlock or a red one as you have. I've got the same fault on my car at the moment too and have had it up since December.
The fix is either a software update at the dealers which may sort it. Failing that you will need a new steering column which will cost around £800-1000 |

I had the faliure on my car outside out of warranty - as my car had only done 24k miles I got a goodwill claim out of BMW. Basically the electronic locking mechanism has failed on your steering column (well known fault) and the fix is to replace the whole cloumn. Cost me about £300 with goodwill.

If you are covered under warranty or can go under goodwill gesture umbrella (low mileage and full BMW service), then worth of trying at dealers. However if you do not have such options, you should ask local indi to try updating software of it first. Any good indi should sort it out. Also look under 'Coders in UK' thread as one guy on there can update relative modules.

This is very common fault on 3 series and infact BMW should have issued a recall.
