Has anyone noticed any other changes to their cars from that software update? Any change in power or drving characteristics. This all seems very familiar....deja vuish.

I just purchased an 07 CPO w/28K miles and last week I couldn't start the car up for a couple of minutes. Then once it did start up I got "Engine Malfunction" error messages saying the car is not running at full power on the xDrive system. I also had issues with defective door locks (only way I could open car was by taking off the key manually).
I took the car to the dealer and they fixed the defective door locks and re-programmed the ECU. They said that there was no reason to replace the HPFP even though my service advisor immediately thought the issue I was having with the cold starts to be related to the HPFP. Just yesterday I tried starting the car after not driving it for 2 days and it took almost a minute to get it started. Should I take it back??? Thanks! |

Insist they do a pressure test on the pump. This will often show up a failure before it starts throwing codes, or strands you. |

Unfortunately, my HPFP is getting replaced for the second time. Twice at start up, the car said engine malfunction. Brought it to dealership today and they said they were going to replace it and also update the software in ECU. Its weird because the first time, I had long cranks at start up. This time, the car was totally fine except for the car saying "engine malfunction".

HPFP Recall
**********I first posted this in the recall thread, but thought maybe this was the better place for my question**********
So back in June 2010, I purchased my 2007 CPO E90 with ~46k miles. The day after I brought it home, it started having the infamous long cranks. Unknown to me (when I bought the car the day before) the salesman failed to tell me that the previous owner had replaced the HPFP 2x before me. Ofcourse, those HPFP were the previous models. Regardless of that, I took my car back to the dealer the next day and they replaced the low pressure fuel pump, and the #933 Model "remanufactered" HPFP. In August I took the car back to dealer for another issue and they also updated the ECU to the new software fix (primes the pump before starting). Thus I should be up-to-date. Every now and then though, I get some long cranks after the car has been sitting. However, this is intermittant. Nothing like before. Thus, after hearing about the recall notice today, I was wondering, since my invoice back in June indicates that the pump installed is the #933 "remanufactered" one, should I take it my BMW SA and ask him to install a "NEW" #933 HPFP, instead of the "remanufactered" one? Or, are all of the "NEW" 933 HPFP really just "remanufactered" 943 models? Thoughts? |

If they were going to release a significantly different part it would get a different part number - your 933 is the same as anyone else's 933

Agreed. I spoke to my BMW SA, who also spoke to the BMW Shop Manager today. Both of these individuals drive the 3 Series car themselves. Anyway, the shop manager lives a block from me and knows me very well. He always looks out for me when I bring my cars in for service. Thus, I trust him completely. Both he and the SA indicated that the 933 HPFP that was installed in my car back in June is BRAND NEW even though the pump invoice says remanufactured on it (i.e remanufactured from the previous 943 model). As for my intermittant longer cranks, they last about 2-3 seconds before the car starts. The shop manager confirmed that any crank longer than 4 seconds indicates a potential HPFP issue, and anything less than 4 seconds are within normal range. |

Considering the announcement's coincidence with the news segments, I'd say they are looking to stave off backlash

Just yesterday I got a brand new HPFP put in my 07 335i and within 15 minutes of driving it home the Engine Malfunction light came on! I just got this 335i CPO about 3 weeks ago and it's been in the shop more than I've actually had it. This will be it's 3rd time in the shop for the same issue! I have a case open w/BMWNA for a lemon law buy back at this point. I love the car but this is ridiculous!

As to my original question: There is another pump called the low pressure fuel pump that supplies enough fuel to prevent over lean engine damage when the HPFP fails.
