LUX H8 V3 vs MTEC H8

With the recent introduction of the MTEC H8 bulbs of course there will be lots of questions about the product and most importantly how it stands up against the LUX H8 V3 angel eyes. Yes the MTEC is newer and uses a similar style, most likely borrowed from the LUX H8 V3 design.

We have had a set of these the MTEC H8 bulbs for a while and we want to give our honest opinion of them. For those of you who know me, you can be assured that this opinion is non-biased even though we produce the LUX H8 V3 angel eyes.

The MTEC bulb is very good quality of course, however it does not have the same solid aluminum design as the LUX H8 V3. The color of the MTEC is slightly cooler, around a 7000, vs the LUX 6500k color. Most importantly the brightness and distribution into the 2 inner and outer ring. Overall brightness of the MTEC is 20 % dimmer then the LUX H8 V3. The inner rings are almost the exact same and we were not able to see much of a difference. The outer ring of the LUX H8 V3 is much brighter then the MTEC. standing farther back from the 2 headlights the outer ring of the LUX is brighter.

Here are a few comparison pictures we took. It is always extremely hard to capture pictures of light even with a good DSLR Camera but we had both headlights on at the same time and made sure they were taken from the same angle.

Overall, the two lights are comperable, but if you are still looking for the brightest lights and the best light distribution then the LUX H8 V3 are the way to go. Also LUX H8 V3 are still made in the USA!

MTEC on LEFT _____ LUX H8 V3 on Right
the last picture is very underexposed and you can see the brightness different the best there.

Thank you for the honest and concise review and comparison shots. I'm torn between getting the MTEC and LUX V3 and need a little more convincing. MTEC claims their LEDs do not have a "strobe or flashing effect (built in resistors)", which the LUX V3's suffer from.

Hm, send me a PM and quote for the LUX V3s + S/H to 93720.

Thanks for the comparison! curious tho. you mentioned the colour of Mtechs were "cooler", does that mean the Mtechs have more of a bluer hue than the Lux (7000k vs 6500k)? In picture 2 - it looks like it has a bit of a purple hue to it or is it just the picture?

I would agree with you except they are probably way too bright at night. I would like to see someone make a diffuser for the inner reflector to block some of the output to the inner rings. The outer rings would be perfect with a HID kit.

These are the type of comparisons that are needed. The pics show great similarity in output. As a new MTEC H8 customer, I'm interested to see independent tests with actual output readings. Heck, I'd love to get a set of Lux to subject both products to my own thorough test procedures. Also, as these units age, I'm interested in build quality and how it translates to life cycle.

After a few days, I love the MTEC. The small price difference led to a reasonable meal and sex. The meal and sex are gone but I'm left with memories and a great set of headlights. Her headlights were also fantastic. I have heard great things about vendors selling both products in respect to customer service. Until long-term reliability results arrive, its great to know that the consumer has quality choices.

Thanks all for the feedback. I figured that if i was going to make a review it needs to be fair, otherwise its not worth making.

As well dont forget the LUX has always worked to stand up for its name and put our customers service first

Great review Marc,

I have had a read on the forum and there seems to be MTEC V3.0 and MTEC CREE LED, are these the same products?

If they are different, then which version of MTEC have you reviewed?

Thanks

the MTEC v3.0 are for the E90 sedan ( pre-lci). this is a review of the H8 style only.

Great comparison from a very honest (and talented) vendor! I can assure you folks that LUX is the original and end-all solution for led based AE's. The customer service alone that I have experienced was really amazing. I would buy anything Marc sold in all honesty because he stands by his product, he is a true BMW/car guy, and he came up with a no BS solution.

I had my lux h-8 v2's upgraded to the 3.0's with no hassle, no questions, and nothing but awesome input and customer service when I reached out to Marc, and I know anybody else would get the same.

Try getting that from Mtec. Not happening. And LUX is made in the USA! we all already suck for driving European cars and not supporting American auto manufacturing, so at least put something on your car that is American!!! lol

Do a search and see how many people melted housings, shorted stuff out, and were displeased with HID AE's. They look terrible at night and they wash the headlights.....I know, I've had them, Ive had every single h-8 colored halogen bulb on the market, and I finished with LUX.

Saw OSS in person but the OSS headlight mod makes the headlight look like a Civic headlight and it cheapens the look of a BMW. And $800 bucks, then sending headlights out is ridiculous. Keep it OEM and go with the LUX solution.
