Stealing BMW's

I recently had my DD Honda Civic Si stolen from me which has now got me paranoid about my e90. I don't have comfort access . I was wondering if it's possible to steal a BMW since it uses smart keys? Without the use of a Tow Truck of course. Do you guys think it is necessary to purchase LoJack?

Comfort Access doesnt really do much in the way of deterring thieves. However, a BMW isnt not as easily stolen as a Honda, totally different ballpark. That being said, if someone wants something bad enough, they will find a way to take it.

If it helps you sleep better at night, get the LoJack. If I tell you that its a waste and not to get it, and then your car gets stolen, are you gonna hold it against me?

Isn't the BMW assist similar to the loJack ? they can still track it if it gets stolen, right ?

Good point. Have to do more research on that. One more reason to have BMW assist 800 number programmed into your phone.

LoJack can activate automatically if the car moves without the fob in it. BMW Assist stolen car location has to be activated manually over the phone, and I think they want a police report number, too. I'm fairly certain it just uses the GPS and cell modem in the TCU, so it could flake out if the car's indoors/underground. LoJack has a more robust transponder on it.

So BMW Assist helps, but it's not in the same ballpark as LoJack if you're paranoid.

FWIW, the cops I talked to about car theft in Milwaukee a couple years ago said that by far the highest-theft cars were middle-aged Hondas and Toyotas, because they were trivially chopped and there was a huge market for used parts. I can't imagine there's nearly such a parts greymarket for E9x... and if somebody wants the whole car they can just flatbed it.

Ok, just did some research for you guys. BMW assists number is 888-333-6118. Put that in your phone now and thank me later.

BMW Assist lasts for 4 yrs from when you take the car off the lot and activate it via calling in or pressing the SOS button by the sunroof button.

BMW Assist DOES work like LoJack and will be able to track your car if stolen. HOWEVER(heres the rub) you MUST get a police report first before you can call to track the car. They will NOT try to locate the car before the cops have written up a file number. I think thats just stupid as it could take 20-30 mins alone before that gets done and your car could be trashed.

That being said, now you dont need lojack!

Just wondering why wouldn't they do it without the police report? Seems they dont TRUST their clients

My bet is it's for privacy reasons -- it's a deterrent to me (or your wife) calling up and asking where you are if I (she) knows or can guess your password.

Thank you guys for all of the reply's, they were all very helpful. After reading all of the post, I think I am going to save myself $800 and not go with the lojack since BMW assist can locate the car. Also because I just don't see how they can steal the E90 without using a flatbed tow truck. I can't see that happening since there isn't even a place for a key. Thanks again fam.
