Hmm that's pretty interesting. Do you guys know if it's the same for Canada. I tried calling BMW Canada and they are as useless as it comes. They had no idea what I was talking about and only could recommend the standard dealer fill. I know that the regs for sulfur content are alot stricter in Canada. I dunno it just feels like a "lesser of both evils" BMWna has come out with to run ll01 oil out here when their motors are designed for ll04. I want to run the best in my car. I know the m54 motors had problems with sludge running dealer fill and hopefully this isn't the case here

Sludge isn't caused so much by the brand/type of oil as it is by the super extended change intervals that BMW calls for.

The Autozones in my area have dropped the price on Mobil One 0-40 to 3.99 a quart. Same for the 5-30 turbo diesel. I bought the 14 quarts they had on the shelf. The counter guy said they might be clearing it out because it isn't a big seller.

BMW is the only company using the lower gas quality arguement. All other european car manufactuers with diesel/petrol (gasoline) engines, have not made any statements here in the US. The issue is the availability of Castrol/mobil LL04 oils in the market, and currently there are non available in the US, so BMW released the statement, to help its buddies. |

A good friend of mine once told me that any oil below $10 per quart/liter, is most likely not a true synthetic. If somethings cheap, its cheap for a reason. Buyer beware.

^ lol I don't think Mobil will sell non-synthetic oil and label it synthetic. They would be sued in a heartbeat. Now other unknown/not nationally recognized brands, maybe.

It isn't a big seller because it is not conventional oil, therefore longer oil change intervals.

Amsoil looks great. If they haven't done so already, they should buy/label their oil with the LL-01 approval sticker. Also they stated, "Mobil 1 at least uses straight forward declarative sentences. Most of the others read as though they were written by a lawyer looking for an escape clause." They never really said that Mobil 0-40 is not fully synthetic. |

I thought it was Shell, which is Pennzoil
http://www.shell.com/global/products...-supplier.html Our cars didn't magically change a year ago, they are the same cars they were 9 years ago. Isn't it a great statement to say any oil under $10/qt. is not true synthetic? Who cares? Mobil 1 and Castrol Edge are LL-01 approved and available at Walmart. |

As far as I know it is now Shell, but that doesn't mean that shell is the better oil, it's just the new partnership that BMW has with an oil company - translation, the best deal for OE oil supplier. I have always run my cars on BMW spec Castrol oil, and will continue to. I don't like changing oil brands and specs anyway.
